News from CV Alliance

Hi, CV!

Orange Fest Unpeeled, Part II

We hosted an Expo for parents and for teens to provide information, share resources, suggest ways to get involved in the community, and to learn a new skill. Parents walked through and chatted. Teens had to chat or play a game in order to “win” free food.

Many thanks for participating extended to Glendale Unified Healthy Start Office, Didi Hirsh Alcohol & Other Drugs, Armunity, and Mental Health, the Fire House & Prom Plus, Glendale Police Department Explorers, K9, Chief Rob Castro, and Officer Joe Allen, L.A. County Sheriff CV Station, Martial Way Martial Arts, Glendale Council PTA, Global Youth Initiative, Planned Parenthood Pasadena SGV, Surface Fitness, Kyle, Allie & Jasper (on growing up CV), 3-2-1 Acting Studios, Merle Norman Cosmetics, Nail Wolf, GCC Alcohol & Drug Studies, John Howell, LMFT, Parekh & Associates: Child, Adolescent & Family Therapy, YMCA of the Foothills, Golden Paws Mobile Spa, Western Pacific Med/Corp, and, of course, CV Alliance.

Teens had a blast doing CV Park’s 100 Citizens Challenge Obstacle course and playing the Y’s “gaga ball,” an inflatable pit in which kids played a modified dodgeball/racketball-like game. Actor Danny Trejo came out to talk to the kids. Musical greats Ryder Buck & the Breakers brought the park down, and a graffiti artist taught us how to use spray cans.

Our wonderful vendors made the event a huge success. They included a photo booth (terrific accessory selection), PaintNKids gave free air brush tattoos, we had Kemsley Shows’ carnival rides, the City of Glendale’s climbing wall, and Dean Henderson, the Elegant English DJ, DJ Hassem’s DJ in the Expo room, Ample Power, and Mike Childress PA System.

My mother-in-law, Margaret Elizabeth Scott Meyer, died this week at the age of 92. She was practical, e.g. she named her kids Elizabeth and Scott. She was artistic, realistic and liked a good Manhattan. She grew up in multicultural Seattle, where she and her sisters would ride their bikes to the Japanese internment camps to bring supplies to their friends. She was friendly, brave, opinionated and she loved her family. We will miss her.
