Continuing efforts to integrate bicycling into the community, nonprofit Walk Bike Glendale will be hosting a kids’ bike safety workshop.

The event will be hosted in partnership with Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital and Glendale Healthy Kids on Saturday, Sep. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pacific Community Center, 501 S. Central Ave. in Glendale.

The workshop is free to the public and kids of all ages are welcome to come learn the basics of not only r≠iding, but also the rules of the road and bicycle maintenance.

“The number one way to avoid getting injured is to make sure your equipment is working,” said Nathalie Winiarski of Walk Bike Glendale, who said mechanics will be on hand to help kids learn how to keep their bikes running smoothly.

Riding lessons will be offered by certified instructors from the League of American Bicyclists, all of whom are also members of Walk Bike Glendale. Kids are asked to bring their own bicycles, if possible, in good working condition. However, a limited number of loaner bicycles will be available for those who need them.

Justin Klein, vice chair of Walk Bike Glendale, said that events such as the workshop and the introduction of more bike lanes and bike racks in the city of Glendale are helping bring bicycling to the forefront as a more widely accepted means of transportation.

“There are a lot of community members who simply cannot afford a car,” said Klein, who felt that biking initiatives are “a good sign to the drivers that it’s okay for people to bike.”

Klein also said that the event was funded through a grant from Dignity Health, in order to combat “diabesity,” a form of diabetes associated with obesity.

According to a 2014 Dignity Health Community Benefit Report, the project that is behind the funding for Saturday’s workshop “will encourage family lifestyle changes through screening, health education/training, behavior intervention, treatment and exercise consisting of three components: 1) outreach, 2) education, 3) family diabesity intervention.”

Free helmets and other giveaways will be available for workshop attendees, while supplies last. Helmets are required for all riders at the event. For more information, visit www.walkbikeglendale.org.
