On Oct. 9, Crescenta-Cañada Cooperative Nursery School (CCNS) held a Grandparents Day for the grandparents of their Busy Bear (4-year-old) and Darling Duckling (3-year-old) students. Proud grandparents spent the day on the school grounds and in the classrooms with their pre-school aged grandchildren.

Grandparents were able to experience a typical day in the classroom that included art projects, free play, story time, singing and dancing. During art time in the Darling Duckling and Busy Bear classrooms, preschoolers and grandparents dipped their hands in paint to make handprints and also made picture frames and received photos as keepsakes for the grandparents. The back of the picture frames had a special message for the grandparents from their grandchild: “I treasure my memories with you. They will last a lifetime.”

Grandparents also got the chance to meet and talk with their grandchild’s teacher and see their classroom and playgrounds. One grandparent was overheard saying, “Next time I ask, ‘What did you do at school today?’ I’ll know exactly what you are talking about.”

“There is a very special and unique bond between a grandparent and their grandchild. The joy on a grandparent’s face when they work with their grandchild side-by-side to complete a project or watch them sing a song is priceless,” said Michelle Reilly, director and teacher at CCNS. “As a teacher, it brings me great pleasure to provide an opportunity for the children to demonstrate all the special skills they have already learned at school.”

Crescenta-Cañada Cooperative Nursery School has served the community for over 55 years. Parents manage and guide the cooperative preschool along with two salaried teachers to create a program to meet the social, emotional, intellectual and physical needs of their children.
