Pee Wee

La Cañada 28, West Covina Bruins 0

On Saturday afternoon at Mt. View High School in El Monte the La Cañada Gladiator Pee Wee team notched their eight shutout of the season and advanced to the Championship Game by defeating the West Covina Bruins 28-0.  In the first two playoff games, the Gladiators have scored 58 points and allowed none.

Andrew Sharman returned the Bruin’s opening kick-off to La Cañada’s 34 yard line.   From there the Gladiators methodically took the ball down the field and culminated in a 41 yard touchdown by Daylon Beasley. Micah Pasten converted the extra point to give the Gladiators an early 8-0 lead.  After the ensuing kick-off West Covina started on their own 40, but the Gladiator defense hung tough and forced a punt.  From their 15 yard line, Beasley took a handoff for a 12 yard gain.  Sharman made a tough six yard pick up and the Gladiators, after a penalty, had the ball on their own 28.  Beasley then took a pitch 72 yards for his second touchdown as La Cañada built an early 14-0 lead.   West Covina recovered the subsequent onside kick close to midfield, and managed to move to the Gladiator 27 yard line as the first quarter ended.

On first play of the second quarter Sebastian Deleon recovered a Bruin fumble on the Gladiator 25 yard line.  Quarterback Sam Faulkner then converted a big first down on a pass to Sharman.  After a penalty and an 11 yard run by Beasley, La Cañada was unable to convert and West Covina took over on La Cañada’s 37 yard line.  West Covina then mounted its best drive of the game, moving for a first and goal inside La Cañada’s ten yard line. But another Bruin miscue was recovered by Patrick Weinmann.   Sebastian Deleon then made a couple of nice runs of 12 and 27 yards and the Gladiators advanced to midfield.  Beasley then broke free for a 50 yard score, and Pasten’s successful conversion made the score 22-0 in favor of the Gladiators.  West Covina’s last chance to score in the first half was extinguished by a timely quarterback sack by Deleon, and an interception to Beasley, which he returned to the Bruin’s 15 yard line.  La Cañada was unable to convert on the last play of the half and had to settle for a commanding 22-0 halftime lead.

The Bruins managed to hold onto the ball for the entire third quarter. After the Gladiator defense held, a fumbled punt gave West Covina the ball back on their own 45 yard line.   The Bruins then marched slowly to the Gladiator 19 yard line.  Deleon came up big with another quarterback sack for a loss of 13 yards.  On fourth down, as they had all game, the Gladiators held and took possession on their own 25 yard line as the third quarter ended.

On the first play of the fourth quarter Beasley ran 75 yards for his fourth touchdown of the game, provided the Gladiators with a 28-0 lead.  West Covina again failed to move the ball and on fourth down Matthew Watson made key stop that gave the Gladiators the ball on West Covina’s 33 yard line. Watson then ran for eight yards, but La Cañada was unable to convert on fourth down after an incomplete pass.  On the ensuing play from the Bruin 31, Jonah Cisneros stripped the ball and Christopher Marfisi recovered putting La Cañada back in business.  Faulkner completed a pass to Weinmann for a fifteen yard gain, but an interception on the next play ended the Gladiator drive.   West Covina took over and their quarterback was greeted by Brandon Shepherd and James Warner for a seven yard sack.  The Bruins were unable to convert on fourth down and La Cañada took as time expired.

The La Cañada Pee Wee team takes their undefeated record into the league championship game against another undefeated team, the Huntington Park Spartans.  The league championship will take place on Saturday, November 21, 2015, at 3:00 p.m. in Covina.
