Aldous Snow (Russel Brand) was a shining gem in an already spectacularly funny movie, 2008’s Judd Apatow-n-Pals comedy “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” And Brand played the new wave British rocker so well that when he walked off screen for the last time, you found yourself wondering what he may be up to next. Aldous Snow deserved his own picture. And now he finally got one – one that gives “Marshall” a run for its money.
Aldous Snow is a drugged out rocker in a PC world. When straight laced and timid record label intern/super fan Aaron Green (Jonah Hill) is sent to London to bring Snow to L.A. for a concert at the Greek Theater, he gets in over his head with the drugs, alcohol, and women that Aldous seems to make materialize.
The pair has 72 hours to make the trip and with every party, every drink, every drag, the clock ticks down. Aaron’s job depends on this gig, as does Aldous’ entire and currently failing career. The combination of wild antics and intensely funny situations sets them back ever more with each passing city, shot and joint. It’s going to be a bumpy ride for these two to get to
the Greek in L.A. in only 72 hours.
This is the funniest movie of the year – I’m calling it right now. The writing is solid, Brand and Green have great chemistry, and since both are top rated comedians, they can bounce any joke back and forth with ease. All while being chased by the record label head Sergio, played by Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs. Combs is an unsuspected surprise, dealing ridiculous lines with the perfectly straight face of a rapper. The three blend perfectly and leave the audience wanting for nothing.
Without anything negative to say about this movie at all, this review winds up short. So to avoid gushing on and on ad nauseam, this reporter recommends readers to just go see the movie. It is worth the admission price.
Rated R for a really good reason. Written and directed by Nicholas Stoller. I give this film 5 out of 5 stars.
