Soroptimist International of Glendale (SIG) will present checks totaling over $24,000 to 10 organizations serving women and girls at its annual luncheon today, Thursday, Dec. 17 at the Oakmont Country Club. President Lola Abrahamian will preside over the festivities.
SIG raises funds throughout the year, but mostly at its annual Bras for a Cause event (scheduled next for April 16) in the spring. A portion of the proceeds are donated to the three local hospitals for breast cancer services, a portion goes to Soroptimist International programs, and the remainder is set aside for community giving. Local organizations are invited to submit applications for funds in late summer, and the group chooses among those applications. This year financial support will be given to Ark Family Center, Ascencia, The Campbell Center, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services, Door of Hope, Girl Scouts, Girls on the Run, Glendale Unified School District, YWCA of Glendale and Soroptimist International programs.
Soroptimist is an international volunteer organization of women who work to improve the lives of women and girls through programs that lead to social and economic empowerment. The Glendale club identifies the needs of our community, and then establishes projects that best address these specific needs. In addition to our commitment to the Glendale community, we are concerned with affecting change at the national and international levels to improve the quality of life for women and girls.
