The Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce held its annual installation luncheon on Thursday at the Oakmont Country Club. Stepping off the board were Glendale Police Dept. Lt. Lola Abrahamian and Clark Magnet High School Principal Doug Dall. President Aram Ordubegian, who will remain on the board as immediate past president, passed the gavel to incoming president Calvin “Kaipo” Chock.

The newly installed board of directors is composed of Dwight Sityar, Matt Morelli, Leonard Ghazarian, Rev. Beverly Craig, Aram Ordubegian, James Pak, Mike Baldwin, Cynthia Livingston, Craig Fisher, Warren Boehm, JD Speas, Steve Pierce, Mike Riley, Robin Goldsworthy, Chris Aristo and Kaipo Chock.

In addition to the installation, grants totaling more than $24,000 were distributed by the Mary Pinola & Crescenta Valley Chamber Education Fund. According to its website, since its inception the fund has awarded over $186,977 to educational programs and capital projects in the Crescenta-Cañada Valley. This year, 11 organizations providing “exceptional service to our community” received grants. Recipients included Crescenta Valley Instrumental Music Foundation at CV High School, which demonstrated what the $3,939 was going to be used for: the purchase of two new flugelhorns. School music director Mathew Schick came to the podium then had two of the jazz band musicians play a selection on the flugelhorn.

Eleanor Wacker ushered in the grant for the La Crescenta Woman’s Club. Wearing a hard hat (decorated with flowers) and waving a hammer and saw, Wacker presented a check to the 100-plus-year-old Woman’s Club for facility repairs in the amount of $1,000.

Chris Waldheim of J’s Maintenance donned a wetsuit and swim gear to present the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center/Glendale Community College Adaptive Physical Education Program with a check for $3,000 to rent pool space at the RBAC for the GCC program. A portion of the grant will also be used to support the purchase of a pool lift to ensure that all students may access the facility.

In all, $24,110 was distributed to the recipients.

The next fundraiser for the Mary Pinola & Crescenta Valley Chamber Education Fund is the annual Smart-A-Thon that is taking place on March 16.
