CVHS Hosts ‘Jazz Night at the Café’
CV High School’s Instrumental Music Dept. is having its annual Jazz Night At the Café on Saturday, Feb. 13 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the CVHS cafeteria. Tickets are $10 for students and adults. Tickets for students with an ASB card are $8.

Please join us for a fantastic evening of jazz music featuring our very own CV jazz band. Refreshments will be provided, along with a complimentary swing dance lesson at 7:30 p.m.

CV High School is located at 2900 Community Ave. in La Crescenta. The cafeteria entrance is on Glenwood Avenue.

GYO Announces Performance
The Glendale Youth Orchestra, conducted by Brad Keimach, performs Sunday, March 6 at 7 p.m. at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale. The program includes: Mozart – Overture to “The Magic Flute,” Beethoven – “Piano Concerto #1, 1st Movement” (Jacqueline Ching, piano), Reinecke – “Flute Concerto in D, 3rd Movement” (Josephine Lee, flute), Sarasate – “Ziguenerweisen” (Rachel Mugemancuro, violin) and Beethoven – “Symphony #2.”

The GYO is funded in part by a grant from L.A. County Arts Commission.

Tickets are $12.50 and may be purchased from the Alex Theatre box office. Groups of 15 or more get 15% off. Students, children and seniors may purchase tickets for $10 each.

Area Alumnae Panhellenic Scholarship Opportunities
High School senior women who will be attending a four-year college/university in the fall 2016 are invited to attend the Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic scholarship social on Tuesday, March 1 at La Cañada Presbyterian Church, Burcham Hall, 626 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada Flintridge. Check-in starts at 6:30 p.m. and the program starts at 7 p.m. This event is intended to provide information about sorority membership as well as instructions on how to apply for a scholarship. Parents are welcome to attend.

The high school scholarships are available to young women who have resided in Glendale, Burbank, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Montrose, Tujunga or Sunland during their high school years, or are graduating from one of the public or private high schools in one of these cities. Flyers are available at the high school counselor’s office and information is available on the Panehllenic website. Attendees must RSVP to GAAPScholarshipRSVP@outlook.com by Feb. 27. Anyone interested in applying for a scholarship must attend the scholarship social; scholarship applications for high school applicants will not be available through the schools, by mail or on our website.

Foothill MWD Opens K-12 Student Art Contest
Foothill Municipal Water District (Foothill MWD) is conducting its fifth annual K-12 student art contest with the theme of competition adhering to the phrase “Water Is Life.” This is a fun and educational project that serves to inspire student creativity while considering the stewardship of our precious water resources. The contest is open to all students K-12 attending a school located within the Foothill MWD service area, including all schools located in the City of La Cañada Flintridge.

Art must be submitted on 12-inch x 18-inch white poster board or drawing paper with a one-inch blank space or white area left on all four sides of the artwork. Artists may use the following art media: crayons, markers, pencil, paints, watercolors, pastels, cut paper or fabric. Photography or computer generated artwork is not permitted.

This event is co-sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) and all winning entries will be submitted to MWD for a second round of competition to be included in the 2017 “Water Is Life” Student Artwork Calendar.

Deadline for entries is April 1, including postmarked submissions. Scholarship Opps from CSF
The Community Scholarship Foundation of La Cañada Flintridge (CSF) has announced that the 2016 scholarship applications are now available. Fulltime students who attend a public or private school located within the city of La Cañada Flintridge and those served by the CV Water District in the Crescenta Valley, regardless of home residency, are eligible to apply for scholarships. Additionally, students receiving services associated with Hathaway Sycamores and Hillsides Pasadena are also eligible.

CSF scholarships range from $500 to $2,200 per student. Last year, CSF awarded scholarships to 19 students totaling $23,000.

Minimum criteria for eligibility include a 3.0 unweighted grade point average and documented financial need. High school seniors should check with their college counselor or visit the CSF website. Financial need is based on information each applicant provides via the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form and is determined by a professional financial aid consultant employed by CSF.

All required school and financial documentation, along with reference reports must be received by April 30.

Scholarship applications can be downloaded from the CSF’s website at http://www.csflacanada.org, or obtained at the college counseling offices of La Cañada High School, Flintridge Preparatory School, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, Hillside School and Learning Center, Saint Francis High School, Crescenta Valley High School, Hathaway Sycamores, and Hillsides Pasadena.

SAT Seminars
Assistance League of Glendale is offering SAT seminars to students attending public and private high schools in Glendale and the surrounding communities. The seminars are from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays through March 2 and on Tuesdays and Thursdays through March 3.

Seminars are held at 314 E. Harvard St. in Glendale. Teachers are currently teaching at local high schools and are highly qualified. The cost is $60 that includes eight meetings (two hours each), a book and Kaplan SAT.

Valley View Holding Fundraiser
Valley View Elementary School PTA is having a dine-out fundraiser on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at Hello Pizza  at 2261 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada. Hello Pizza will donate 15% of pre-tax sales to Valley View PTA. Donations benefit the programs and school assistance provided by the PTA. Come join the greater Valley View community  from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. for a night of food, socializing and fundraising. Before leaving, simply place your receipt in the Valley View donation box at the counter.
