Members of Assistance League® of Flintridge (ALF) recently learned that over 600 students in the neighboring Sunland-Tujunga area are identified as homeless. Working with the Homeless Education Program of Los Angeles Unified School District, the ALF Operation School Bell® (OSB) committee proposed expanding the ALF OSB program and providing 400 $25 vouchers to purchase shoes for homeless students in Sunland-Tujunga. ALF members enthusiastically approved the gift.
The vouchers were presented by ALF OSB Chair Jean Silliman, OSB Assistant Chair Lori Rotenberg, and ALF President-Elect Donna Shepherd, to Katie Rivezzo, counselor at the LAUSD Homeless Education Program.
“Shoes are always a major need,” said Rivezzo, whose focus is the Northeast section of LAUSD. “We often see students wearing shoes with holes and shoes that are too small.” She explained that counselors in the LAUSD program will assist families to purchase shoes with the vouchers, and added, “This gift will be a significant contribution to these children in need.”
ALF Operation School Bell also serves students in the La Cañada Unified School District, and partners with Assistance League of Pasadena to operate OSB in the Pasadena area.
