In May 2015, the City of La Cañada Flintridge purchased two used 35-foot compressed natural gas buses. After new paint, upholstery, and decals, the LCF Shuttles were placed into service on Routes 34 and 3/33.

Route 3/33 has been in place for some time and provides service through La Cañada Flintridge and into Glendale. Route 34 is a new route that runs from La Cañada High School to the Montrose Shopping District along Foothill Boulevard. It is an overlay of the portion of 3/33 that runs within La Cañada Flintridge, providing more concentrated service. Because of the addition of Route 34, the average time between shuttles has been reduced from 30 to 18 minutes.

LCF Shuttle service has proven particularly valuable for employees of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory looking to come into town for lunch. With more frequent, reliable service, patrons can get around town in a timely fashion without having to use their personal cars.

The investment of the additional buses has paid off, as ridership has increased dramatically over previous years. In 2013 and 2014, the LCF Shuttle had 4,122 and 6,498 riders respectively. With the introduction of the additional buses in 2015, ridership jumped to 33,449.

“The results of this additional investment in transportation for the community has been remarkable,” said City Manager Mark Alexander. “Clearly there was a need for reliable and timely shuttle service around town and increased ridership means more business for our Foothill business corridor. It’s a win-win.”
