The Lady Falcons of Crescenta Valley High will soon hang a new banner in their gymnasium.
The girls’ basketball program became the latest CV sports team to win a CIF championship, as it survived the Division 1A final round against Mira Costa 37-36 at Azusa Pacific University’s Felix Events Center.
It is the program’s first ever championship.
The Falcons (24-9) led 37-35, but fouled Mira Costa’s Halle Maeda while taking a three-point attempt with three tenths of a second left in the game. Maeda made the first free throw, but missed the second one, meaning the last one would be to tie the game.
She missed that one as well, and the buzzer sounded as players fought for the ball.
Falcons’ senior center Alisa Shinn had 14 points and 18 rebounds rebounds, and teammate Josie Brock had six points and eight rebounds. CV trailed 14-12 in the second quarter, but finsihed the half on a 9-0 run for a 21-14 lead. They pushed that lead to 28-18 in the third before Mira Costa (22-9) made its comeback.
