History of the Wildlife Waystation Topic of HSCV

Martine Collette, a successful Hollywood costume designer, began rescuing abandoned exotic animals in the 1960s. In 1976, she purchased 160 acres in the San Gabriel Mountains and founded the Wildlife Waystation. Since that time the Wildlife Waystation has rescued, rehabilitated, and given sanctuary to over 76,000 wild and exotica animals. Its founder, Martine Collette will relate the story of this amazing facility at the next meeting of the Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley on Monday, March 21 at 7 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living.

Glendale Hires ELP Advisors to Explore Launch of Tech Intiative

In an effort to identify and attract tech companies to the City of Glendale, the Glendale Economic Development Corporation hired Estolano LeSar Perez (ELP) Advisors to study the existing technology base and to develop a strategy to attract and retain these businesses and employees. The company was set to begin its six-month project on March 15.

Components included in researching the strength of a tech cluster include diving into proximity to education. This includes the students on robotics teams, the advanced technology and media classes at Glendale Community College, and the many residents who commute to universities such as Cal State Northridge, USC, Cal Tech and UCLA.

A key component of ELP Advisors research will be to both define “tech” and, once the categories are determined, to list all the companies in Glendale that fit that categorization. Their research will also include comparing Glendale to other communities to determine the City’s competitive advantage in any of the listed categories, and then to interview employers to get a better understanding of their needs.

ELP Advisors is deeply familiar with tech clusters, and will be able to help Glendale identify local tech ecosystems, as well as what factors tech companies consider when choosing their locations. This expertise, along with an understanding of Glendale’s assets, would enable a strong strategy plan to be developed.

Rosemont Preserve Open Gate Afternoon

An “open gate” event is taking place at the Rosemont Preserve on Sunday afternoon, March 20. This is a chance for residents to visit the Preserve and wander the trail at their own pace and enjoy the tranquil setting, the wildlife and the natural beauty. Photographers: bring your camera to capture the late afternoon light.

The gate will be open from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Friends of the Rosemont Preserve Committee members will be available to answer questions and present this community resource.

The Preserve is located at the north end of Rosemont Avenue, just past the chain link fence. As street parking is limited, please park at Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave. Those planning on walking the trails should wear sturdy shoes.

This event is free to the public and suitable for all ages; no reservations required. Rain cancels. Sorry, no pets please.

Work It Out in March

On Saturday, March 19, volunteers will be at Deukmejian Wilderness Park for a Wilderness Workday from 8 a.m. until noon. All are welcome to help with tree watering and invasive plant removal moving to continue working towards park restoration.

Deukmejian Wilderness Park is located at 3429 Markridge Road in La Crescenta.
