Spring’s New Beginnings

Spring has arrived, though in California let’s face it – there hasn’t been much of a difference between winter and spring these last few years. But even if the season doesn’t live up to its reputation, spring does signal new beginnings. And that’s something we’re experiencing here at Crescenta Valley Weekly.

It is with sadness that I say good-bye to two people who have worked hard to make this paper great.

Reporter Jason Kurosu has been with us for several years. He is one of those reporters who love what he does and it shows in his work. He never missed a deadline (something this editor is eternally grateful for), wrote fairly and was always on the lookout for other stories. Jason wrote hard news for us, meaning he covered Glendale City Council, high-speed rail meetings and other similar types of stories. Once or twice over the years he covered more light-hearted stories and did well with those too.

Not surprising, as his skill evolved his reputation grew and he was offered full time work with a newspaper in Indio. He moved down there where I know he will excel. I am grateful that he was part of the CV Weekly family these past several years and am hopeful that perhaps he can still write once in a while for us.

I have known sales professional Kim Mekelburg for more than 10 years dating back to when we worked for the Valley Sun newspapers. She has a bigger than life personality and a mind like a steel trap. Her knowledge of sales, procedures and protocols helped shape Crescenta Valley Weekly since she became part of our team in May 2010. She is generous with her knowledge, too, which benefitted everyone here. With her guidance this newspaper flourished and I know that her clients appreciated her assistance.

Kim leaves us to join her husband in his business, which has recently seen tremendous growth. Her expertise is needed there to guide that growth and I am sure that their success will continue on its trajectory.

I thank these two professionals for their years of dedication to Crescenta Valley Weekly and I wish them every success.

With April fast approaching, there are a few things I want you to put on your calendars. April 2 is bingo night at the American Legion Hall (see In Brief on page 3 for details), April 3 is the Brew Fest in Montrose (read more in Melinda Clarke’s column in Business on page 25 or Charly Shelton’s article on page 4), April 9-10 is the American Cancer Society Foothills Relay for Life event at Clark Magnet High School (the ad on page 9 has details on how to take part), April 16 is the Hometown Country Fair at CV Park (more info on this annual community event on page 12). I’m hoping to be at all of these events and will keep an eye open for you.
