SPRING JURIED EXHIBIT AT WHITE’S
The Pasadena Society of Artists presents the spring juried exhibition at White’s Fine Art located in Montrose. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Forty-one artworks are presented by 37 members of the Pasadena Society of Artists as selected by juror Clovis Blackwell.
The exhibition continues until Saturday, April 30. Meet the artists at the opening reception Saturday, April 9, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Refreshments
and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
Media include oils, acrylics, watercolors, bronze sculptures, onyx sculptures, encaustic, digital and traditional photography, metal sculptures, fused glass, mixed media, pastel, charcoal, graphite, etchings and ceramics.
Founded in 1925, the Pasadena Society of Artists is one of the area’s original professional artist groups.  The Society is noted for its vigorous, active membership, wide diversity of artistic statement, and high professional standards. MT. EVEREST CONQUEROR TO SPEAK IN DESCANSO GARDENS
Tonight, Thursday, April 7 Gary Nelson, one of the nation’s premier mountain climbers, will make a PowerPoint presentation in Descanso Gardens about his ascent of Mt. Everest. The presentation will be at the Pacific Camellia Society’s final meeting of the season.
A prominent and busy Glendale attorney, Nelson has found the time to climb the highest mountains on all but two of the world’s seven continents, with his crowning achievement being his ascent of the world’s highest mountain, Mt. Everest. His PowerPoint presentation will include pictures of spectacular Himalayan mountain scenery, some of which will be of the infamous Khumbu Icefall where 16 sherpas lost their lives in a 2014 avalanche.
The 7:30 p.m. meeting will begin with a short PowerPoint presentation by Brad King, editor of the National Camellia Journal. His pictures will illustrate the wide array of camellia colors.
Membership in Pacific Camellia Society is not required to attend. The meeting is open to the general public. Admission is free.

‘TROPICAL LU’AU’ AT WOMAN’S CLUB
The La Crescenta Woman’s Club is hosting a tropical lu’au on Saturday, April 9 at the clubhouse. PASADENA FESTIVAL OF WOMEN AUTHORS
The 8th Annual Pasadena Festival of Women Authors will be held on Saturday, April 9 at the Pasadena Hilton Hotel from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The festival will feature Jane Smiley, author of the Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel, “A Thousand Acres,” and Kristin Hannah, author of the 2015 Goodreads Historical Fiction Choice Award winning novel, “The Nightingale,” as well as five other acclaimed authors – Cynthia Bond, Jan Ellison, Nayomi Munaweera, Victoria Patterson and Maggie Shipstead.
The Pasadena Festival of Women Authors brings together a group of diverse, well-published authors to discuss their work with enthusiastic readers whose love of literature inspired the event. The festival provides a stimulating setting where authors and guests interact with each other and authors are available to answer questions and sign their books for guests.
Proceeds from the event will benefit both the Masters Series, part of the
Lifelong Learning Program at the Pasadena Senior Center, and the Writer-in-Residence Program at Pasadena City College. Tickets for the festival are $95 per person and include lunch. ‘ARMENIA: AN OPEN WOUND’ EXHIBITION AT BRAND LIBRARY
The City of Glendale and the Library, Arts & Culture Dept. present the exhibition “Armenia: An Open Wound” in partnership with the Armenian American Museum. The exhibition will be on view at the Brand Library Art Galleries April 9-June 11 during the library’s regular hours: Tuesday and Thursday noon to 8 p.m., Wednesday noon to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A series of weekly programs will accompany the exhibition. The exhibition will commence with an opening reception on Saturday, April 16 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.
“Armenia: An Open Wound” debuted in Mexico City at the Museo Memoria Y Tolerancia [Museum of Tolerance] in April 2015 in honor of the Armenian Genocide centenary. The exhibition explores the intricate history of the Armenian people and creates an interactive experience by illustrating early Armenian culture; it shares the story of Armenian livelihoods on their ancestral lands, and prepares viewers to gain a deeper insight into the events that lead to the 1915 Armenian Genocide.

EUROPEAN MASTERS ON MUSIQUES ROSTER
The next presentation of Salon de Musiques is on April 10 and features the music of Beethoven, Faure and Bosmans. The concert will be introduced by musicologist Dr. Kristi Brown-Montesano and performed by a virtuoso duo consisting of John Walz, principal cellist of the Los Angeles Opera, and Steven Vanhauwaert, pianist.
An informal Q&A with the artists will follow the performance and a gourmet buffet dinner provided by Patina with French champagne will be served.

‘SUDAN EGYPT’ PRESENTED BY SIERRA CLUB
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club presents, Bob Ihsen’s “Sudan Egypt” on Tuesday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.
Ihsen’s program will whisk attendees north from Khartoum along the Nile to visit archaeological sites relating to the Kingdom of Kush, an ancient rival to the better-known pharaohs to the north. Then to the pyramids of Meroe, a world heritage site, the Coptic Christian tombs at Dongola, then on to explore Jebel Barkal and the Royal Necropolis of Napata plus a visit to nomadic tribes in the isolated Bayuda Desert and the ruins of ancient desert cities miles from the Nile. Returning to Khartoun attendees will witness the Whirling Dervishes of the Sufis, the Tomb of the Mahdi and then cruise to the confluence of the Blue Nile and the White Nile.
Ihsen is a lifelong residence of Covina and a 40-year Sierra Club member.

Julie Snyder will paint an oil portrait from a live model as demonstrator for Glendale Art Association’s April meeting. Her paint quality is expressionistic as she captures the essential mood and gestures of her subjects. Her paintings have been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally, and her career has included several years of residence in Spain. She promotes the arts, paints, teaches and holds workshops both locally and across the country including trips for artists to Europe for painters, sculptors and photographers.

STUDENTS TO PERFORM AT CALTECH
On Sunday, April 17 at 3:30 p.m. at Ramo Auditorium at Caltech, the Caltech-Occidental Symphony continues its concerts featuring student concerto competition winners. Soloists will be pianist Karlming Chen and cellist Shahar Amitay. Allen Robert Gross will conduct the orchestra.
Chen will perform Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto. He was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Vancouver. He is a second-year Ph.D. graduate student at Caltech studying mathematics. He has played the piano since the age of 5. Chen also plays the piano in Caltech chamber music groups and violin in the orchestra
Cellist Amitay will perform Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Shahar is a freshman at Occidental College intending to major in chemistry and minor in music. He began his cello studies in Israel and continued in the New England Conservatory. He studies cello at Occidental with Gloria Lum.
The program opens with Weber’s Overture to “Der Freischütz.”

A CALL TO ARTISTS
An art information seminar is being held at Samy’s Camera in Pasadena on April 17 at 1 p.m. to provide information about the Mojave National Preserve Artists Foundation (MNPAF) in-residence program. This seminar is open to the public.
Representatives of the MNPAF will conduct the seminar for anyone interested in learning more about the Preserve and who may apply for a residency. Samy’s is located at 1759 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena.
Bob Killen, Foundation president, and Todd Seuss, Preserve superintendent, will explain how the Mojave’s majestic canyons, mountains, mesas, and long-abandoned mines and rock-walled military outposts make great subjects for photographers and other artists. They will also talk about Mojave’s Artists-in-Residence Program, including how to apply to be an artist-in-residence. Artists-in-residence from past years will be present to discuss their desert experiences and share their art work.
The presentation will conclude with an opportunity for questions.

FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE CELEBRATES INDIE BOOKSTORE DAY
On Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse recognizes Independent Bookstore Day with a full schedule including author and animal appearances, pet care demonstrations, benefits for Operation School Bell and the Pasadena Humane Society, and a drawing to win book give-aways.
Independent Bookstore Day is a nationwide event created in 2015 to show support for local booksellers and a special time for them to reach out to their communities. Approximately 400 bookstores are expected to take part in the day.
Flintridge Bookstore will present bestselling mystery writer Anne Perry from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.  She will give a brief presentation and sign a large selection of past titles (many of these are 50% off the list price).
The bookstore is also pleased to welcome local Brownie troop 1251. They are sponsoring a book drive through the organization Milk+Bookies for Operation School Bell, benefitting underserved elementary-age children in the Pasadena Unified School District. They are here from noon to 3 p.m. to accept new books for this charitable cause.
April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month, and Flintridge Bookstore is inviting several local authors, a pet care instructor and a therapy dog to share their stories, expertise, and compassion with visitors to the store. The Design and Rescue Club of La Cañada High School will be selling mugs created by student Lina Lee to benefit the Pasadena Humane Society. Cedar, a beautiful collie and therapy dog, will be visiting to listen to children who want to read to him.

FREE STROKE SUPPORT GROUP, AND HEART LECTURE
A stroke support group hosted by Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center meets the second Tuesday of each month from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Rehabilitation Conference Room on the third floor of the hospital.
The support group is open to caregivers, family members, friends and stroke survivors and will help with communication, education, and coping styles while building friendships, solving problems and sharing resources and experience.
