Glendale Cruise Night on Brand Boulevard returns on Saturday, July 16 at 5:30 p.m. The event is promoted as the biggest car show in Southern California. Enjoy classic cars, live music and fireworks show! There is no charge to attend.
The History of BBQ at HSCV Meeting
At its next meeting on Monday, July 18 at 7 p.m., the Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley will present the history of the barbecue.
Roasting meat goes back to the origins of man, but barbecue is a more recent invention and much of the development of the modern barbecue, as we know it today, is uniquely Southern Californian. Charles Perry, Los Angeles’ resident food historian, will talk about the history of this American tradition.
The meeting is held at the Center for Spiritual Living-La Crescenta, 4845 Dunsmore Ave. (at the intersection of Dunsmore and Santa Carlotta avenues) in La Crescenta.
Weekend Closures on Foothill Freeway in Pasadena
The California Dept. of Transportation (Caltrans) will close portions of the Foothill Freeway (I-210) as part of a pavement rehabilitation project. Residents and local businesses located near the freeway may experience noise, vibrations and dust associated with construction activities. The following schedule will be in effect, weather permitting, and is subject to change:
Nightly through tonight, Thursday, July 14
Eastbound I-210
•7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Up to three lanes between Lowell Avenue and Lake Avenue
•10 p.m. to 5 a.m. – Lowell Avenue on-ramp
Westbound I-210
•7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Up to three lanes between Lowell Avenue and Lake Avenue
Motorists are advised to “Be Work Zone Alert.”

Movies in the Park
The Los Angeles County Dept. of Parks and Recreation is hosting Movies in the Park for the remainder of July.
The family-friendly movies are on Wednesday nights and start around 8:30 p.m. or when it’s dark enough. On July 20 is “The Good Dinosaur” and on July 27 is “Zootopia.”
CV Park is located at 3901 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta.
Unconventional Workdays
All are invited to take part in two “unconventional workdays” taking place the next two Saturdays.
On Saturday, July 16 volunteers will be working on the Los Angeles River for a Riverwalk workday from 8 a.m. until noon. Meet at the Glendale Narrows Riverwalk, 300 Paula Ave. in Glendale, for a morning of work in the landscaped areas along the trail.
All participants need to sign a waiver before working. Minors must provide a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
On Saturday, July 23 is the wilderness workday at Deukmejian Wilderness Park, 3429 Markridge Road from 8 a.m. until noon. Volunteers will work to remove invasive weeds, water the trees, and more.
These programs are for all ages and abilities. Families, individuals, groups, Scouts and students needing service hours are invited.
PHS Wants to ‘Clear the Shelters’
The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA, along with over 50 Southern California animal shelters and rescue groups, is participating in the second annual Clear the Shelters campaign, a day long adoption event spearheaded by NBC4 Southern California and Telemundo 52 Los Angeles. On Saturday, July 23 the adoption fee for all animals will be reduced to $20 and the shelter will hold extended adoption hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

NNO Coming Up
On Aug. 2, the community prepares for National Night Out. The Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station will have handouts for the adults, goodies for the kids, and barbecued hot dogs, water and chips for everyone.
NNO at the Sheriff’s Station is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The station is located at 4554 Briggs Ave. in La Crescenta.
Sediment removal meetings planned
Information meetings are scheduled locally regarding the Devil’s Gate Reservoir Sediment Removal and Management Project. L.A. County Public Works has been actively planning for a more sustainable Devil’s Gate Reservoir. To share these plans with the community, there will be a series of informational meetings held that are designed to provide details on the sediment removal activities to restore and maintain flood control capacity and the habitat enhancement program that will create and preserve native habitat within and around the reservoir.
A meeting will be held on Saturday, July 16 at 2 p.m. at Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge, Main Room, 4469 Chevy Chase Drive in La Cañada Flintridge.
