California Philharmonic Maestro Victor Vener has announced soulful songstress Judith Hill is joining the acclaimed orchestra as a surprise special guest during its Greatest Hits concert on Sunday, July 31 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
“As someone who loves playing classical music and singing pop/soul songs, I think this concert will be a wonderful cross of the two worlds,” said Hill who will be making her California Philharmonic and Walt Disney Concert Hall debut on Sunday. “Singing with an orchestra is one of my all time favorite things to do. Classic soul music with strings and brass … How could you go wrong?”
A highly sought-after artist, Hill has worked with Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Josh Groban and John Legend among others. Among her many distinctions, Hill was slated to sing a duet with Jackson during his This Is It concert tour. Sadly, due to Jackson’s passing, the duet did not happen though Hill did have the opportunity to honor Jackson at his memorial service when she sang lead on the song “Heal The World.” Fans nationwide may also recognize Hill from her captivating run on the fourth season of the wildly popular singing competition reality show “The Voice.”
Hill starred in the documentary film “20 Feet From Stardom,” which documented some of the top background singers of the 21st century, and was a featured artist on the soundtrack, for which she won a Grammy Award.
Hill and Darren Ritchie will take turns, accompanied by the orchestra, delivering tributes to some of pop music’s fallen legends including Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Prince and Queen among others.
“I’m excited to be back in my genre of the rock world since I travel the world internationally with the rock group and sing rock songs,” said Ritchie, who wowed audiences last year when he performed songs from “Les Miz” with Cal Phil. “I hope the audience feels the love that we have for music and the celebration we have for life.”
Maestro Vener will take the concert to an even greater level as he interweaves classical masterpieces such as “Scheherazade,” “The Mikado” and Haydn’s “Miracle Symphony” into the afternoon’s dynamic program.
“This Greatest Hits concert has something for everyone as we pay heed to some of the greatest pop legends and classical masterpieces,” said Vener. “This Sunday’s concert is a tribute and a testament that quality artists and music live on forever.”
Cal Phil at Walt Disney Concert Hall performances start at 2 p.m., with the intimate pre-concert Talks With The Maestro at 1 p.m. in BP Hall.
