A community mixer is being held on Saturday, Aug. 20 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Crescenta Commons, located at the southwest corner of Orange and Rosemont avenues in La Crescenta. According to organizer Robbyn Battles, the meet-and-greet is an opportunity for the community to gather and thank local veterans who recently replaced the flag and pole at the Commons.
Battles said that a note had been adhered to the tower that houses the flag, which was installed in November 2014 at the Commons ribbon cutting, stating the flag was in need of replacement. But when fellow Commons “keeper” Fred Laughrey went to remove the flag, neighbors stopped by to say how much they liked the flag.
Battles said that, unsure what to do, local members of the American Legion and VFW were consulted. The vets purchased a new flag and pole and installed it.
“We wanted to do something to pay back the American Legion and the VFW,” Battles said. “We thought this would be a good way to do that plus provide an opportunity for the community to get together.”
There will be refreshments from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with a flag salute at 10 a.m.
“I think our community loves our veterans,” Battles said, “and it would be nice for them to be publicly thanked for what they do.”
