Glendale Appoints New Community Services & Parks Director
The City of Glendale has formally announced the appointment of Onnig Bulanikian as its new director of Community Services and Parks. Bulanikian had been serving as interim director since June 2016.
Engineering Career Path Topic of Science Lecture
“What is Engineering?” is a lecture planned at Glendale Community College on Tuesday, Sept. 27 as part of the Science Lecture Series. The lecture will be held at 12:20 p.m. in Cimmarusti Science Center room 177. It is free and open to the public. The speaker is Christopher Herwerth, GCC engineering instructor and licensed mechanical engineer. Herwerth has experience in both the aerospace and energy industries. In addition to teaching, he is serving as department chair for transfer career pathways in engineering. He will discuss what engineering is and what engineers do, as well as engineering as a career pathway.

Work Planned by SCE
Southern California Edison will be performing maintenance on the electrical system in the area. In order to perform this work safely, SCE must temporarily turn off power. This outage will allow the modernization of the grid by making needed upgrades and repairs to increase reliability. Power outages may cause some inconvenience and therefore attempts are made for outages to be isolated down to the smallest area possible and the work completed safely and quickly.
The work will start on Sept. 26 at 9:30 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. Nine residential customers will be affected and one commercial customer will be affected. No Traffic Control meters will be affected.
The outage boundary is Angeles Crest Hwy, east side 200’ north of Lavender Lane.
The next outage on Sept. 26 is from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nine residential customers will be affected and one commercial customer will be affected. No Traffic Control meters will be affected.
The outage boundary is Princess Anne Road, east side 800 south of Green Lane.
Work is also scheduled for Sept. 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Ten residential customers will be affected and one commercial customer will be affected. No Traffic Control meters will be affected.
The outage boundary is San Gorgonio Road, Pl/N 103’ E/0 Escalante Drive Extd.
Note that the power may be off for the whole period or may be turned off more than once. This planned outage may not begin exactly at the stated start time, and some conditions may cause this planned outage to be postponed. The times noted are SCE’s best estimate and circumstances may affect both the start time and the completion time indicated above.

 ‘Gigantic’ Rummage Sale
The National Charity League, Inc., Glendale Chapter is sponsoring a gigantic rummage sale on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pacific Community Center in Glendale. Watch Out for Wildlife
Watch Out for Wildlife Week is Sept. 19-25 and Caltrans and the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife remind drivers to be alert especially in wildlife areas. Highway fencing and undercrossings across the state help keep motorists and animals safe but experts say drivers still need to be cautious since wildlife is active in the fall.
GPD Hosting Bear Meeting
The Glendale Police Dept. is hosting a meeting relating to bears in the foothill area. The meeting is being held tonight, Thursday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Sparr Heights Community Center, 1614 Glencoe Way in Glendale 91208.
Local Memoir Author Gives Reading At GCC
The Los Angeles Writers Reading Series at Glendale Community College presents a reading by local author and Antioch University creative writing professor Bernadette Murphy on Sept. 26 at 12:20 p.m. in the Student Center.
A former weekly book critic for the Los Angeles Times, Murphy will be reading from her recent acclaimed memoir, “Harley and Me: Embracing Risk on the Road to a More Authentic Life.” Murphy writes about literature, women, risk taking and life from motorcycles to knitting.
The ongoing Los Angeles Writers Reading Series is coordinated by GCC English instructor Claire Phillips to celebrate local writers and to give students access to literary events where they can meet and talk with authors who wrote some of the material used in their English classes.
