39th Annual Oktoberfest This Saturday

Come join us for the 38th Annual Oktoberfest, the largest outdoor Oktoberfest in Southern California, on Saturday, Oct. 1 from noon to 11 p.m. on the 2200, 2300, 2400 blocks of Honolulu Avenue. Where else can you can bring your family, friends, kids, grandparents and business associates and meet up with your neighbors to have a brat and a beer, hear top quality entertainment for free, enjoy games and rides and don your lederhosen? Only in Montrose! This year promises to be better than ever and we will have something for everyone! We endeavor to make this event family friendly and make sure the kids have lots of activities to keep them busy! For families we will have rides, games, face painting, keepsake ceramic making, glitter tattoos, henna artwork, Euro bungee and custom balloon making! CBS Los Angeles named our event as “the best place in Southern California to celebrate Oktoberfest for its nightlife and music” and we intend to keep that title!

On tap for entertainment for this year’s Oktoberfest is the ’80s cover band sensation Past Action Heroes, and Stevens and the Gypsies who play a unique, irresistible blend of traditional flamenco styles with western pop and Latin rhythms. Also taking the stage will be the German American Brass Band, Southern California’s premier German brass band modelled after an authentic German blaskapelle, the D’Oberlander Dancers, and kids from the Hummingbird Conservatory and Franklin Elementary School singing in German. Verwunderlich! We will also have all of our costume contests: best dressed dog, Lil Miss and Master, Mr. and Mrs. Oktoberfest and our famous stein-holding contest. For the complete entertainment line-up and sign up forms for the contest, log onto www.montroseoktoberfest.org.

We will also be pouring a diverse group of beers ranging from traditional German Oktoberfest beers to local craft brews and classic American domestic beers. Our traditional German beers are brewed according to the Märzen style. The original wort has to be between 13% and 14%. These beers are bigger, richer beers brewed in March and stored in caves during the hot months of summer. In the fall, they were enjoyed at the Oktoberfest celebration. These are the same beers that are poured at the original Oktoberfest in Munich. The German beers will be Spaten Oktoberfest (the world’s first Oktoberfest beer), Spaten lager and Franziskaner Weissbier. Our domestic beers will be Shock Top, Bud and Bud Light. New this year will be our craft beer garden featuring Hangar 24 Oktoberfest, Golden Road Hefeweizen, Wolf Pop, 329 Lager, Karl Strauss Oktoberfest, Drake’s IPA, Ninkasi Tricerahop and Oktoberfest, Hanger 24 Chocolate Porter and Easy Glider. Brewyard Brewery from Glendale will be pouring its seasonal brew. Of course all of these beers pair well with brats and sauerkraut from Schreiner’s Fine Sausages, a Montrose institution!

New this year, we will be featuring apple strudel from another great business in Montrose, Berolina Bakery. Berolina Bakery has been in Montrose since 1991 and there you will find freshly baked artisan breads, a wide assortment of Danish pastries, croissants and traditional European cakes and pastries.
