NEW LOCAL YOGA CLASS
New gentle/level one yoga classes continue on Friday mornings at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s of Mountains Church.
This class will improve joint mobility, flexibility, muscle strength and balance and will include some restorative yoga poses to help the body heal its own aches and pains by engaging the parasympathetic system. MUSIC APPRECIATION CLASS AT GLENDALE COLLEGE
Dr. Ted Stern, professor of music at Glendale Community College, is conducting off-campus music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This ongoing series is for musicians and non-musicians alike. This semester will cover the topic “A New Appreciation of Music: Surprises from the Internet (beginning with the 18th Century – the world of Bach and Handel).”

BALLROOM DANCE PERFORMACE AT CVHS

CORBISIERO AND CUSHING AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE
On Sunday, Oct. 23 at 4:30 p.m. the community is invited to enjoy the music of Chuck Corbisiero and the poetry of Bill Cushing at Flintridge Bookstore and Coffee House.
Nearly 50 years ago, guitarist Corbisiero and “blue collar poet” Cushing lived across the street from each other in New York City. Now the two have gotten together to present a show that combines their talents.
Copies of Corbisiero’s and Cushing’s accompanying chapbook, “Notes & Letter: a celebration of music and poetry” are available at the event.

POET SHAHÉ MANKERIAN AT VILLAGE POETS’ EVENT
The Village Poets of Sunland-Tujunga announced that poet Shahé Mankerian will be featured at their next Monthly Reading Series on Sunday, Oct. 23 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Bolton Hall Museum.
Mankerian’s most recent manuscript, “History of Forgetfulness,” has been a finalist at four prestigious competitions: the 2013 Crab Orchard Series in Poetry Open Competition, the 2013 Bibby First Book Competition, the Quercus Review Press – Fall Poetry Book Award 2013, and the 2014 White Pine Press Poetry Prize. His poems have been published in numerous literary magazines.

PANEL DISCUSSION ON CULTURE OF DEATH

LECTURES AT LANTERMAN HOUSE
The Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation will host a lecture at the Lanterman House Visitor Center by Stuart Byles, author of the authoritative book on the history of wine making, “Los Angeles Wine.” Byles’ lecture will take place on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets to the lecture are $5 per person. Last year was a full house with over 700 visitors on Halloween night. The place was filled with ghouls, goblins, witches and many other characters. CV SIERRA CLUBS HOSTS BRUCE HALE
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club presents Bruce Hale’s, “Turkey: The Grand Loop from Istanbul to Ankara” on Tuesday Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.
Bruce Hale, Sierra Club member and world traveler, will talk about his May 2016 visit to Turkey, a country between Europe and Asia. Over 2,500 miles for 17 days, the tour traveled from Istanbul to modern Ankara. Starting in Istanbul, the slide show will include Troy, Izmir, Ephesus, Pamukkale, Antalya, Cappadocia and Ankara. Each destination has its own history going back to ancient times. Roman ruins abound and some of the best preserved ruins can be found there.

GLENDALE COLLEGE PATRONS CLUB PLANS FUNDRAISER LUNCHEON
On Friday, Nov. 4 the Patrons Club of Glendale Community College/GC Foundation, Inc. will hold its annual fundraiser at the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale starting at 11:30 a.m. The event will benefit deserving students at Glendale Community College with scholarships and grants-in-aid. Last year, the Patrons Club awarded more than $23,000 in scholarships and grants-in-aid. This year the Patrons Club will celebrate its 69th year of service to the college’s students.
The luncheon will honor Gael Davitt in appreciation for her years of support and generosity to the Patrons Club. The event will also feature a dance performance by students in the GCC Dance Dept. There will be many prizes, a drawing for $1,000 and a silent auction. A live auction will feature packages of four tickets and one parking pass for a Clippers game, a Lakers game and a Kings game.

TWO EXHIBITIONS AT BRAND LIBRARY
Brand Library & Art Center and Thinkspace Gallery present two concurrent exhibitions opening on Nov. 5. In a Dream (En unSueño), presented in collaboration with Mexico’s Fifty24MX Gallery, will feature new works and a mural installation by Mexican artist and muralist Edgar Flores (SANER). Nexus, a group exhibition curated by Thinkspace, will feature pieces by 64 new contemporary artists alongside murals and installations by Bumblebeelovesyou, Cryptik, Drew Merritt, Kelly Vivanco, Lucien Shapiro and Yoskay Yamamoto.

THREE ROMANTIC MASTERS ON MUSIQUES ROSTER
The next presentation of Salon de Musiques is on Nov. 6 and features three German Romantic masters: Robert Schumann, Richard Strauss and Xaver Scharwenka.

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. T.O.P.S. – Take Off Pounds Sensibly – is a self-accountability group meeting held every Monday. Weigh in is from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS
The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).
Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
