La Cañada Gladiators v. Glendale Bears

The La Cañada Gladiators Jr. Gremlins hosted the visiting Glendale Bears on Saturday, Oct. 8 in the morning at 8:30am at La Cañada High School.

The first quarter was a defensive battle. Both the Gladiators and Bears looked particularly strong early on in the game. The Bears’ defense put pressure on quarterback Liam Pasten who was unable to connect with his receivers. The Gladiators were able to keep it scoreless with their own strong defensive play in particular with key flag pulls by Christopher Spears, Thomas De Lucia and Jeremy Fuhrman. Carter Freeman stopped a Bears’ drive with an interception in the first quarter.

The Gladiators got on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a flurry of offense. Spears scored the Gladiators’ first touchdown on a seven-yard pass from Liam Pasten who would finish the day with three passing touchdowns. The Bears responded in turn with a four-play drive that featured a stellar 25-yard run stopped by a touchdown-saving flag-grab by Freeman, though the Bears would eventually punch it in from 10 yards out on a running play. On the very first play of the ensuing Gladiator possession, Pasten completed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Alec Heberger to open up a 14-7 lead, and the Gladiators never looked back. An amazing interception by Gunnar Herman kept the score at 14-7 going into the half.

The third quarter saw another touchdown pass from Pasten to Heberger and another great interception by Spears to stop a Bears offensive drive.

In the fourth quarter Heberger would punch in another touchdown with a five-yard run bringing the score to 28-7. Pasten was intercepted in the fourth quarter, but the Bears failed to capitalize on the turnover. C.J. Mattmann ran for a touchdown on the last series for the Gladiators that was negated by a procedural penalty. Phoenix Vengco ran into the end zone two plays later for the final Gladiator score of the game.

The offensive/defensive line including Padilla, Matthew Merrill, Wyatt Zinn, Maddox Vengco, Adrian Garcia, Timothy Runnels, Gunnar Herman, De Lucia, and Flores all contributed greatly to the team’s success.

The Gladiator Jr. Gremlins next game is against the Bell Gardens Lancers on Saturday Oct. 15 at 8:30 a.m. at Bell Gardens High School.

La Cañada 43, Glendale Bears 6

On Saturday morning at La Cañada High School, the Gladiators Gremlin team won their fourth consecutive game of the season defeating the Glendale Bears 49-0. After beginning the season with a 6-6 tie against the Rosemead Rebels, the Gladiators have won four in a row by a combined score of 141 to 12. A successful running game complimented by a play-action passing game accounts for the Gladiators’ success on offense, while a tough, opportunistic defense keeps its opponents out of the end zone. With three games left in the regular season, the Gladiators are atop the Arroyo League.

The Gladiators will be away next Saturday, Oct. 15 to face the tough Bell Gardens Lancers.

Jr. Pee Wee

La Cañada 49, Glendale Bears 0

On Saturday, Oct. 8 at La Cañada High School, the La Cañada Gladiators improved to 4-1 by handily defeating the Glendale Bears 49-0. The Gladiators’ victory improves the team’s record to 4-1 on the year. After an early season loss to the Rosemead Rebels, the Gladiators have now won four games in a row and are in first place in the Arroyo Division.

The Gladiators next travel to Bell Gardens on Saturday, Oct. 15 to take on the Lancers at noon.

Pee Wee

La Cañada 24, Glendale Bears 0

On Saturday afternoon at La Cañada High School, the La Cañada Gladiators Pee Wee team won its fourth game of the season bringing their record to 4-1. Thus far on the season the Gladiators have scored 128 points while allowing only 14.

The offense controlled the game as quarterback Alec Sanchez-Nigolian was able to run and pass the ball consistently. The running game was solid as James Warner and Victor Guiragossian ran behind the powerful offensive line featuring Marcus Buenabenta, Tyler Sparks, William Broberg, and Sean Escobar.

Once again the stingy Gladiator defense did not allow the opposition into the end zone. Colin Mathews Olson Matthias William Aivazian, Christopher Aivazian, Justin Webster, CJ Owens, Remi Valdez, Michael Bailian and Anthony Sanchez and, Jaden Keshishian caused many turnovers and, stopped most of the opponent’s plays in the backfield.

On Saturday, Oct. 15 the Gladiators will be at Bell Gardens High School to play the Bell Gardens Lancers at 3 p.m.

Jr. Midgets

La Cañada 44, Glendale Bears 0

A highly motivated and undefeated Glendale Bears’ team traveled to La Cañada High School on Saturday afternoon to take on the undefeated La Cañada Gladiators. The Bears were, however, unable to stop the Gladiators varied and effective offensive arsenal of weapons, and La Cañada dealt Glendale a convincing 44-0 defeat.

The Gladiator offense opened the day with a series of solid runs by Daylon Beasley made possible by the great blocking of the offensive line including Brandon Shepherd, Sebastian Deleon, Jake Fitzgerald, and center Charlie Stewart. Midway through the quarter, Beasley scored from the eight-yard line for the game’s first touchdown to give La Cañada a 6-0 lead.

After the Bears first set of downs was cut short by the vicious pressure of the La Cañada defensive front of DeLeon, Fitzgerald, Jonah Cisneros, and Matthew Watson, running back Markel Wallace flew to the house for a 45-yard touchdown score. Quarterback Pierce Clarkson successfully converted from three yards out making the scoreboard 16-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw strong Gladiator tackling from Robert Barreras, Stewart Fitzgerald, Patrick Weinmann, and Marcus Powe. Glendale’s best drive of the day was stopped, however, when Beasley intercepted an errant pass on the Gladiator four-yard line. Hard runs from the La Cañada scrimmage by Tony Guerrero set up a 65-yard scoring sprint by Wallace up the right side. Receiver Justin Zoltzman hauled-in the conversion from Clarkson pushing the tally to 24-0. The second quarter also witnessed a key pass deflection by Powe, Guerrero’s fumble recovery, and a “pick-six” by Wallace which made the score 30-0 at half-time.

Glendale’s offense started the second half with a brief four and out. La Cañada’s offense then employed a play which featured a completion to the uncovered receiver Justin Sanok for 15 yards and then a blazing 15-yard run by Andrew Sharman. Guerrero topped the drive with a three-yard score up the middle and the Gladiators went up 36-0 at the end of the third quarter.

The final quarter saw several successive long gains brought back by penalties, but these were immediately followed by yet another evasive scramble by Guerrero for a 78-yard touchdown. Running back Chris Marfisi ran the double reverse in for the conversion, which took the scoreboard to 44-0 where it remained until the final gun.

Next week, La Cañada will host La Puente at Muir High School in Pasadena at 10 a.m.
