On Saturday, Oct. 15, the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual 5K run-walk marathon, though this year will be a little different than past events. Titled a Halloween Fun Run, participants of all ages are invited to wear festive Halloween attire while traversing the 5K course. In past years, 300 to 400 participants have run or walked the 5K. However, this year approximately 500 participants are expected to be at the walk/run.
The race will be held at Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave. in La Crescenta, with festivities starting at 7 a.m. with warm-up exercises overseen by Extreme Boot Camp. There will be seven categories of competition with medals being awarded. There is a kids’ pumpkin fun run for younger runners (no fee to take part).
5K participants can register on the day of the event but pre-registration is encouraged. The fee is $25 before Friday; for an event T-shirt (while supplies last) there is an additional charge of $10. As in previous years, $5 of each entry fee will go directly to the school or youth group of the participant’s choosing. Additionally, the school with the most participants, percentage wise, will receive an extra $100 donation, as well as a trophy and bragging rights.
“This is a fun, fresh air event. I love seeing the kids and parents out there,” said Lisa Dupuy, executive director of Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce. “Participants can run or walk, so there’s no pressure. The event usually takes place on a beautiful morning when the community can be healthy together.”
The 5K Running of the Foothills was started in 2000 as a way to showcase physical fitness while raising funds for the chamber, its many philanthropic interests and local schools. Supporters of the event include J’s Maintenance, Run with Us Pasadena, the YMCA, Crescenta Valley Weekly, Extreme Boot Camp, Agnes Streb-Konefat, Podley Properties, Ryan’s Residential Repairs, B2B Fitness, Inc., Eleanor Wacker, Bonner’s Party Rentals, CV Water District, JR Hardware Sash & Door, Craig’s Electric, Farm Fresh to You, Riley & Assoc. Advertising, American Legion Post 288, Tyler’s Physical Therapy and Pilates and Glendale Adventist Medical Center.
