Lantern Festival at St. George’s
St. George’s Episcopal Church in La Canada will again present an All Souls’ Day Lantern Festival on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m.
This east meets west service combines the Celtic season of Samhain, a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the “darker half” of the year, with the Japanese festival of Tōrō Nagashi where people write remembrances of their ancestors, neighbors and friends on to floating lanterns. The lawn of St. George’s substitutes for water as a means to reflect and remember those in our lives whom we love, but see no longer.
People are invited to bring pictures of loved ones they wish to remember to place them next to lit candles on the lawn. St. George’s provides colored lanterns where people can write names and other notes of affection to be placed over candles during a special portion of the service. After the service, all are invited to stay for a reception to enjoy the lantern-covered lawn.
For questions or inquiries contact The Rev. Anthony Keller (818) 790-3323 or email office@saintglc.org.
