Though the temperatures outside encouraged barbecue rather than soup, CV United Methodist Church welcomed about 250 guests to its annual Empty Bowls event on Saturday night. Diners paid $20 to choose a handmade ceramic bowl then have it filled with one of the premium soups donated by local restaurants.

Keeping in the spirit of the event, Hunger is Scary, Pastor Steve Poteete-Marshall donned a Frankenstein monster mask when greeting guests. He said that he was happy with the turn out and appreciative of the number of volunteers despite a Dodgers vs. Cubs championship game.

“We had several die-hard Dodger fans that helped out,” he laughed.

Organizer Jeanne Lavieri estimated that nearly $6,000 was raised that will be donated to various charities.

In addition to the funds, Poteete-Marshall said the event was a way to bring the community together noting that diners included church members, attendees from other churches and some who don’t attend any church.

“This event brings us all together from the community,” Poteete-Marshall said. “You can’t save everyone, but you can help many! We’re here to make a difference.”

For those who missed out, the bowls that weren’t chosen at Saturday’s event will be on sale at the Nov. 12 Prom Plus Holiday Boutique at St. Luke’s of the Foothills, 2513 Foothill Blvd. in La Crescenta, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
