Crescenta Valley High School’s theatre group the CV Players will be performing Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” through this weekend. The tale follows the love triangle of school teacher Ichabod Crane (Justin Galvan), alpha male Brom Van Brunt (Max Dubner) and Katrina Van Tassel (Madeleine Martin).

The story takes place in Tarry Town, not far from the haunted valley of Sleepy Hollow. Sleepy Hollow is reputed to be inhabited by the Headless Horseman, who roams the night searching for his head. The story surrounds Katrina, the only child of an extraordinarily wealthy farmer, which leads to nearly every man in town vying for her hand in marriage.

While the play has a creepy aura, just in time for Halloween, there is also an underlying sense of comedy – something that did not come naturally to all of the actors.

“[This form of comedy] forces the actor to bring about the comedic elements physically,” said Martin. “This has been a challenge for me because it requires a much deeper character analysis and skill to create comedy through body language rather than what is said.”

This show marks the premier production for the first-year drama group. Working with a new group has its advantages and disadvantages, which can be made more challenging when adding a first time director.

“I definitely struggled with approaching all the other work behind the scenes,” said director Madi David. “However, working with the cast has been truly inspiring.”

Being the leads in the production, Martin, Dubner and Galvan are not taking their opportunity for granted.

“The most exciting part of this entire production has been being a lead,” said Galvin. “Up until this point I have only had supporting roles, so to experience something new like this has been an amazing opportunity.”

With three strong leads and a solid supporting cast, along with expert costumes and a period perfect set, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” will keep audiences riveted for the entire performance.

Show times are Oct. 27, 28, and 29 at 7 p.m. in the MacDonald Auditorium in the 4400 block of Ramsdell Avenue. Tickets range from $8 to $12.
