he La Crescenta Woman’s Club held its annual Authors Luncheon on Saturday where a few select authors were invited to present some of their past series, as well as their latest writings. Members of the club listened to the three authors speak about their books, were able to ask questions of each about their characters or ideas, and then enjoyed a luncheon that was provided by the club.
The theme for the event, keeping in the spirit of Halloween, was murder mysteries and each book featured had to do with the chilling topic. The authors told very different stories in each of their books while maintaining the murderous theme.
Author Diane Vallere told of her fashion-based murder mystery, “Silk Stalkings” and how she incorporates her love for Doris Day into her novel. It is from Day that she said she draws much of her inspiration.
Author Alieen Nowatzki talked of her novel, “A Quagmire in Orcas Island,” which offered much suspense and a fascination with the far off, beautiful places of the world.
Lastly, author Tammy Kaehler shared excerpts from her book “Red Flags” based on a racecar driver who finds herself in tough situations both on the track and off.
As everyone enjoyed their lunch, students from the Crescenta Valley Key Club, who volunteered to serve at the event, brought out food and bussed the tables, offering to help guests in any way needed.
The co-chairs of this year’s event were Carol Huntwork and Carol Stein. They said that the funds raised from the Authors Luncheon, as well as from the silent auction, would be supporting the Desi Geestman Foundation. The Desi Geestman Foundation is a local charity that helps children living with cancer. Funds will also be dedicated to the club’s scholarship awards for the end of the school year.
Marianne Jennings, president of the La Crescenta Woman’s Club, said she was pleased by the event’s success and the number of people who attended, describing the club as one big happy family.
“We need to serve the community,” she said explaining the goals of the club and how important service is to club members. She added the club was accepting new members; anyone who would like information on the LCWC can contact (818) 957-9806 or email info@lacrescentawomansclub.org.
