Local men and women who have served in the armed forces and need a home may soon have another chance at finding a roof over their heads at Glendale’s Veterans Village.
Tony Carnegie, a representative for Thomas Safran & Associates, which developed and manages the facility, said the waiting list for Veterans Village will be reopened on Jan. 16.
“There will be availability of two and three bedroom units,” he explained. “These would house three to seven people.”
Carnegie explained that Veterans Village was met with overwhelming demand as soon as construction for the site broke ground in 2014 – over 4,000 applications were submitted by people who hoped to clinch one of the complex’s 44 units. Of those, 36 applications were supported by the American Legion Post 288 in La Crescenta.
Despite the heavy demand for acquiring housing at the facility, Carnegie said that he was not aware of any current plans by Thomas Safran & Associates to expand the facility or to build other veterans housing complexes in the vicinity.
Veterans Village, which opened to much fanfare in April, is the second housing complex in Glendale made to house veterans.
According to a press release issued at the time of the facility’s grand opening the complex was created in a $20 million partnership that brought together the developer, the city of Glendale, the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, and New Directions, an organization that provides services to veterans.
