The site of the former Montrose Theatre on Honolulu Avenue will come back to life with a screening of two blockbuster movies from the its heyday when it was in the only movie theatre in the Crescenta Valley. On Friday, Aug. 27 local singer/actor Dennis Morgan stars in the all-American musical, “My Wild Irish Rose.” On Saturday, Aug. 28, Glendale High graduate John Wayne stars in the five-time Oscar nominee, “The High and the Mighty.”
Both screenings are family fare and will begin at 7:45 each evening in the alley/parking lot next to Andersen’s Pet Store at 2218 Honolulu Ave. in Montrose. The Festival starts with a cartoon and a historical short subject showcasing the Montrose Western Days Parade and Rodeo and featuring
many Hollywood stars of the 1950s.
Dennis Morgan, the highest paid star at Warner Bros. in the late 40s, was a resident of the Alta Canyada area where he raised three kids who attended local schools.  During the late 40s and 50s he was very active in the local community as the honorary mayor of the Crescenta-Cañada Valley, founder of the Montrose Christmas Parade and a leader in the fund raising efforts for Two Strike Park.
John Wayne, son of a local Glendale druggist, was known as Marion Mitchell Morrison while growing up in Glendale. After Glendale High School, he attended USC where he first found his way onto the screen as a stunt man in early western movies.  From these humble beginnings, he became, perhaps, the best known and most popular actor of his time.
The whole family is encouraged to attend the free event. Seating is not provided; attendees must bring their own chairs or blankets.
