CVTC Meets Tonight

The Crescenta Valley Town Council meets tonight, Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library community room. No agenda was released as of press time.

Rosemont Preserve Open Gate Morning

The public is invited for another “open gate” event on Sunday morning, Jan. 22 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. This is a chance to visit the Preserve and wander the trail, enjoying the tranquil setting, the wildlife and the natural beauty. Photographers are encouraged to bring their cameras to capture the early morning light.

The gate will be open from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and Friends of the Rosemont Preserve Committee members will be available to answer questions and show this community resource.

The Preserve is located at the north end of Rosemont Avenue, just past the chain link fence. As street parking is limited, park at Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave. in La Crescenta. Please wear sturdy shoes to walk the trail.

This event is free to the public and suitable for all ages, no reservations required.  Rain cancels event. Sorry, no pets please.

CVCA to Kick Off 2017

The Crescenta Valley Community Association will have its first meeting of the year on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library. The meeting will include discussion on local issues as well as an opportunity for foothill residents to bring their concerns. For those who live in Glendale above Honolulu between Lowell and Pennsylvania, the Far North Glendale Homeowners will hold its annual meeting at 6:30 p.m., before the CVCA meeting.

Closures Continue on Foothill Freeway

The California Dept. of Transportation (Caltrans) will close portions of the Foot-hill (I-210) Freeway as part of a pavement rehabilitation project. Scheduled closures are subject to change and/or cancelation.

•Eastbound Pennsylvania Avenue on- and off-ramps through spring.

Through Jan. 20: Eastbound I-210

•7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Up to three lanes between Lowell Avenue to Lake Avenue

•7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Lowell Avenue and La Crescenta Avenue on-ramps, Ocean View Boulevard on- and off-ramps

•7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Eastbound I-210 connector to Ventura Freeway (SR-134)

•7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Eastbound I-210 connector to SR-710

•7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Eastbound I-210 connector to southbound Glendale Freeway (SR-2)

Through Jan. 20: Westbound I-210

•7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Up to four lanes between Mountain Avenue and Lowell Avenue

•7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Gould Avenue, Angeles Crest Highway, Ocean View Boulevard, and Walnut Street on-ramps, Foothill Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue off-ramps

•9 a.m. to 5 a.m. – Westbound I-210 connector to southbound SR-710

•7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Westbound I-210 connector to southbound SR-2

•7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Eastbound SR-134 connector to westbound I-210

The night time closures are necessary to minimize traffic delays and provide a safe work zone for construction crews and motorists while working along the I-210.

Free Workshop on Tree Care

Foothill Municipal Water District (FMWD) is hosting a tree care workshop at Descanso Gardens on Tuesday, Jan. 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The workshop will focus on how to care for trees in a drought.

Even with recent rains, many trees in the community are suffering from the lasting effects of drought.

Linda Eremita, the lead certified arborist at TreePeople will lead the class. Information on choosing climate-appropriate species will also be discussed.

Free Flowering Trees from the Arbor Day Foundation

Residents in can ring in the New Year with 10 free flowering trees by joining the Arbor Day Foundation any time during January. By becoming a part of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, new members will receive two Sargent crabapples, three American redbuds, two Washington hawthorns, and three white flowering dogwoods.

The free trees are part of the Foundation’s Trees for America campaign.

The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between Feb. 1 and May 31, with enclosed planting instructions. The six- to 12-inch tall trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge.

Members will also receive a subscription to the Foundation’s bimonthly publication, Arbor Day, and The Tree Book, which includes information about tree planting and care.

To become a member of the Foundation and to receive the free trees, send a $10 contribution to Ten Free Flowering Trees, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, Nebraska 68410, by Jan. 31. Residents can also join online at arborday.org/january.

Call For Les Tupper Community Service Award Nominations

Nominations are being accepted for the Les Tupper Community Service Award. Awards are given to recognize organizations, businesses, individuals and high school students who provide exemplary service to the community of La Cañada Flintridge.

Nominations can be made by organizations and individuals. Nomination forms and criteria are on the La Cañada Flintridge Coordinating Council website www.lcfcc.info. Nomination forms are also available at the City Office, the LCF Chamber Office and the LCF Library. Nominations may be submitted online (www.lcfcc.info), by email (bgelhaar@charter.net) or by mail (LCFCC, Box 264, LCF CA 91012).
