Ray at Piano Spheres

By Nestor CASTIGLIONE

Piano Spheres continues its 2016-17 season with a recital on Tuesday, Jan. 31 by pianist Vicki Ray. Among the works on her wide-ranging program of contemporary music will be pieces by Pulitzer Prize winning composers David Lang and Julia Wolfe. Both have entrusted Ray with the world premieres of their “spring and greene” and “East Broadway” respectively. The latter’s husband and fellow Bang on a Can alum, Michael Gordon, will also be debuting a work on the program, “Debrosses Street.”

The program pieces will include works for two pianos and for percussion ensemble, as well as for solo piano. Sharing the stage with Ray will be pianists Aron Kallay and Joanne Pierce Martin, as well as the Los Angeles Percussion Quartet. The other composers appearing are Erik Griswold, Dylan Mattingly, and Brad Lubman.

The concert will take place at the REDCAT Theatre (631 W. 2nd St., Downtown Los Angeles), adjacent to the Walt Disney Hall and will begin at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for general admission, $20 for REDCAT members and students, and $12 for CalArts students, faculty, and staff.
