On Thursday Feb. 2, Valley View celebrated the Lunar New Year and welcomed the Year of the Rooster with a performance by Korean musicians playing four traditional instruments known as samul nori. This type of music is known as a Korean contemporary percussion band, which was played by a group called “Shi Na We” from Los Angeles.
Teachers and Valley View staff were treated to a luncheon that featured “bibimbop” or “bibimbap.” “Bibim” means “mixing” and “bop or bap” means “rice,” which is mixed rice with various vegetables. It is one of Korea’s best-known dishes around the world.
Lydia Park, Korean parent liaison, explained the traditions and the history of the Lunar New Year celebrated by Valley View families. The festivities were sponsored and supported by the Korean parents of Valley View and the Korean parent ambassadors.
