Smiley Makes Long-Awaited Return to Mound

Jimmy Smiley at CVHS
Former Crescenta Valley High baseball player Jimmy Smiley made his college debut at Whitman College on Feb. 12, earning the win in an 8-4 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. He struck out four batters and walked one.

Smiley graduated CV in 2015, but was injured during league season that year. Last season, his first at the Washington state-based school, he suffered a torn labrum and didn’t pitch. Fellow CV graduate Eric Ma is also a pitcher on the team. Ma is 2-0 on the season, picking up a win Feb. 18 against Pacific University (Oregon). Ma went six innings, giving up two runs, eight strikeouts and two walks.

Whitman is playing a double-header at the Mariner’s stadium, Safeco Field, March 4 and March 5 against Centre College and Smiley is expected to get a start in one of those games. The Whitman Boxers play in the Northwest Conference in the NCAA Division III. They are currently 4-4 overall, and 1-2 in conference.
