Glendale City Council Forum Monday Night
On Monday, March 13 the Montrose-Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a City of Glendale candidates’ forum starting at 6:30 p.m. sharp. All 10 candidates are expected to be in attendance. At this forum we will be asking the candidates questions that are specific to the Montrose/La Crescenta/Glendale areas in the Far North. The questions will be related to the business needs of the area as well as the residential needs. We will also have a lightning round session where we will ask a wide variety of questions in which the candidates will hold up a “yes” or “no” cue card to reflect their answer. We will also be taking questions from the community. If you have a question that you would like to submit to the forum regarding an issue or a question directed for one of the candidates, please email us at mvcc@montrosechamber.org. You will also be able to submit your questions at the forum. We will be fielding the questions and will try to get to as many different types that we can.
This year there are 10 qualified candidates who are running to fill three vacant seats on the city council. Two of the vacancies are for incumbents Ara Najarian and Zareh Sinanyan who are running again for council. The third seat was vacated by Laura Friedman in November when she was elected assembly member for the 43rd district. The current city council voted to leave Laura’s seat open until the April election rather than fill it temporarily. In 2013, when then-council member Raffi Manoukian was elected as city treasurer leaving an open city council seat, former Mayor Frank Quintero was appointed for the remaining 14-month term on the city council. Six former Glendale mayors turned down the city’s offer to apply for the job.
Following is the list of the 10 city council candidates who were qualified to run: Vrej Agajanian, Rick Dinger, Mark MacCarley, Onnik Mehrabian, Grant Michals, Mike Mohill, Ara Najarian, Zareh Sinanayan, Mike Van Gorder and Susan Wolfson. For detailed information on each candidate, log onto www.glendalevotes.org. There you will find bios on all the candidates along with direct contact information and a link to their website, information about ballot Measure L amending the city charter to require term limits for councilmembers, Glendale Community College and Glendale Unified School District areas, precinct maps and polling locations, videos regarding the upcoming election and much more. There is information in Armenian, Spanish, Korean and Tagalog on the election process.
We are also hosting an Election Town Hall in conjunction with the City of Glendale Clerk Ardy Kassahkian. The purpose of this forum is to let voters know of the changes that have occurred in the voting process for this upcoming election, specifically on redistricting. There will be a question-and-answer session following the presentation along with a meet-and-greet with the city council candidates. This will give you an opportunity to meet all of the candidates and ask them where they stand on specific issues as well as ask any question that you might have.
