Guests at the biennial fashion show and luncheon benefitting Las Candelas enjoyed an afternoon reminiscent of all things Hollywood. The event, titled “Love is a Many Splendored Thing,” was held on March 6 at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel. The theme, according to Las Candelas president Ellyn Semler, “is a reflection of the commitment the members of Las Candelas make to bring love and encouragement to children who long for stability and normalcy in their lives.”
Prior to taking a seat for lunch, the 600-plus guests had the opportunity to peruse racks of high-end clothing available for purchase. Once settled in their seats, a multi-course meal was served that included The Brown Derby 1960s California Cobb Salad.
The room had been transformed into a fashion designer’s dream with a catwalk in the middle giving models the chance to easily show off the latest fashions from Lourdes Chavez.
In addition to food and fashion, guests had the chance to bid on a variety of opportunity prizes that ranged from a two-night stay at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa to dinner for four at the Jonathan Club.
An estimated $80,000 was raised at the event.
“We’re really happy with the turnout. These children need so much,” said Patti McCormick who, with co-chair JC Byer, oversaw the event.
She added that plans will begin shortly for the 2019 event.
Las Candelas provides programs and financial assistance to children and youth in vulnerable situations. Each month we bring programs to the children at Hillsides in Pasadena and Hathaway Sycamores in Altadena. We also provide financial assistance to Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services, the YWCA of Glendale Domestic Violence Program and Ascencia.
