Today, Thursday, April 6, at 6 p.m. Dr. Myron Dembo will present “What Parents & Teens Need to Know about Academic Success in High School and College.” He will make his presentation in the Crescenta Valley High School library.
Dr. Dembo specializes in the areas of parenting, learning and motivation with a focus on teaching students how to become more self-regulated learners. He has written three books and over 100 papers and research articles on the teaching – learning process. His recent book is used at colleges throughout the country. He has served as a consultant for many school districts and community colleges and has presented numerous workshops on teaching students how to learn.
All are invited (especially parents). The high school is located at 2900 Community Ave. in La Crescenta.
LASD Holding Accelerated Hiring Opportunity
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept. will be hosting an accelerated hiring opportunity at the STARS Center for deputy sheriff trainees on Saturday, April 8 at 7:30 a.m.
Applicants will have the opportunity take the written exam, physical ability test and interview – all in one day. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept. is looking to hire hundreds of qualified deputy sheriff trainees in the near future.

Rosemont Preserve Restoration Day
The community is invited to the Rosemont Preserve Restoration Day on Saturday, April 8 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. to help protect the natural habitat at Rosemont Preserve. The Preserve is lush and green and simply beautiful … but trails need some trimming and weeding. All are invited to come and explore a new trail – completed by Eagle Scout Kevin Faeustle in January.
Wear sturdy shoes, comfortable clothes and garden gloves (long pants and sleeves are recommended). Tools will be available.
The Preserve is located at the north end of Rosemont Avenue, just past the chain link fence. As street parking is limited, please park at Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave.
This event is free to the public and suitable for all ages and no reservations required. Rain cancels event. Sorry, no pets please.

‘Herps’ of the San Gabriels
The City of Glendale – Community Services and Parks Dept. is hosting a presentation by Chris DeGroof (and his “herp” friends) from the Southwestern Herpetologists Society at Deukmejian Park. Come learn about local amphibians and reptiles and the role they play in the natural world. The morning includes an easy hike in the park to search for new “friends.” The presentation is on Saturday, April 8 from 9 a.m. until noon at Deukmejian Wilderness Park.

Acclaimed Author Gives Reading at GCC
The Los Angeles Writers Reading Series at Glendale Community College presents a reading by author and editor-in-chief of the Los Angeles Review of Book, Tom Lutz, on April 10 at 12:20 p.m. in the Student Center.
Professor of creative writing at UC Riverside, Lutz is the author of several works of critical acclaim.

Robots Topic of Glendale
Tech on Tap
Enjoy what’s on tap and meet Bing Jiang, co-founder and CEO of Rolling Robots, Inc., when she talks about “The Impact Robotics Competitions Have on K-12 Education.” This Tech on Tap will take place on Wednesday, April 12 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the newly renovated (and not yet open to the public!) Central Library in Glendale. Event is free but space is limited so RSVP.
Jiang is the co-founder and CEO of Rolling Robots, Inc. – a Los Angeles-based kids tech and robotics playgrounds where kids make and code robots to learn the STEM-related skills.
Light happy hour snacks will be provided. Brief presentation, long post reception. Thirty-minute talk starts at 5:30 p.m. Casual environment with good company and great conversation!
