George Leonard Dutton
George Leonard Dutton was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on  Dec. 22, 1927, the son of Morris and Mary Dutton. He passed away on Aug. 17.
A 30 year veteran in the United States Army, George received the Bronze Star Medal in Korea and served as a major in the 63 ARCOM Infantry Division. He spent 20 years in the Reserves and also served in the Coast Guard during WWII as a radio man.
George worked for the Boy Scouts of America as an executive in charge of the Exploring program in the San Fernando Valley Council for 26 years. He helped expand and direct the Exploring program where Boy Scouts could be introduced to different career opportunities such as law enforcement, aviation, sailing, veterinarian medicine and so much more. He planned the first National Aviation Fly-In where Scouts from all over the country could fly-in and meet.
He then worked at the United Way for 10 years and again excelled at their fundraising campaigns. He was the first to raise over $1 million in a single campaign.
George was also very active in his church, Tujunga United Methodist Church. He served on the board and on the “Church Leaders Council.” He always continued to help in the church for years and will be missed by a large church family.
He continued to give back to his community in many ways. He was V.P. of his Kiwanis Club, a member of the Rotary, Salvation Army Board and The American Legion Post as well. He was also an active member of the board of managers at the Verdugo Hills YMCA for years.
George met his long life love Warrienne of 62 years in Santa Barbara at a 5 & Dime store during WWII. They got married three years later and were together ever since. Later came three sons: Tom, Dave and Paul Dutton.
He enjoyed square dancing and singing with the Crescenta Valley Highlanders Chorus for years as a Barber Shop Quartet singer.
George is survived by his wife Warrienne; sons Tom, Dave and Paul; and grandchildren Nolan, Nathan, Kate, Logan and Jennifer Dutton.
His contributions to the Army as a major, Bronze Star recipient, United Way, Boy Scouts and any organization he served were always great and too numerous to count.
There will be a viewing at Crippen Mortuary, 2900 Honolulu Ave. in La Crescenta from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21. A memorial service to share in the celebration of his life on Sunday, Aug. 22 at 3:00 p.m. at Tujunga United Methodist Church, 9901 Tujunga Canyon Blvd. in Tujunga. Flowers can also be sent to the church.
Donations will be accepted at Tujunga United Methodist Church on behalf of George Dutton to continue some of George’s favorite ministries.
