The Mix Bar in the 2600 block of Honolulu Avenue has had its doors closed to the public since February and now the city of Glendale has scheduled a revocation hearing for Aug. 25.
“It is a revocation on the conditional use permit,” said Kristen Asp of the city’s community planning department.
The conditional use permit was originally granted to the establishment in 2005 and allowed the “continued on-site sales, service and consumption of alcoholic beverages, public dancing and a billiard establishment.”
On Feb. 25 of this year the Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) issued a notice suspending the establishment’s license.
“That violation is enough to start revocation,” Asp said.
The city has notified the property’s owner and the manager of the building of the meeting.
“As of [Tuesday] I had not been contacted by an owner or operator,” Asp said.
Prior to the February suspension the establishment had its license suspended for a 10-day period in December 2009. At that time investigators found two violations: The building’s doors were to remain closed during operating hours and they were to have a security guard posted in the parking lot. Earlier that month Glendale police had made several arrests at the bar including three for felony gun possession. Then in March the doors were closed by ABC.
“The Board of Equalization had [requested] a hold be put on their license until an issue was resolved,” said John Carr of ABC at the time of the suspension.
The agency may request a hold on a liquor license if the business is delinquent in its taxes. At that time the board did not comment directly on The Mix but sent an email explaining their parameters of suspension due to taxes owed. The email stated: “An alcohol beverage license may be suspended if a taxpayer is three or more months delinquent in the payment of taxes or penalties due under the Revenue and Taxation Code.”
In the past the bar has had several complaints lodged against it by local neighbors. The police had responded to several calls concerning the location.
The public is invited to the hearing to share concerns or support of the bar.
The revocation hearing is on Aug. 25 at 9:30 a.m. at Municipal Services Building, 633 E. Broadway, Room 105, Glendale.
