On Friday, the Scholl Canyon Estates Gracious Retirement Home in Glendale celebrated its 100 residents by hosting the Estates’ 4th Annual Senior Prom. The event was held in the retirement home’s lobby and was from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The theme of the 2017 senior prom was a Prom Night in Paris.

Marybeth Thicke, the Scholl Canyon Estates activity coordinator, said she had been planning the event for over six months.

“Residents were really excited. We actually had to start the prom early because they were already in the dining area,” said Thicke.

Students from Herbert Hoover High School wore their own prom outfits and volunteered to put up decorations and set up the tables for the event.

Attendees, dressed in formal attire, enjoyed a three-course meal and live music from crooner Matt Barber. Throughout the night residents were welcomed to dance on a makeshift dance floor. Prior to the prom, Scholl Canyon Estates’ residents were asked to fill out ballots to vote for the prom king and queen.

Table placards reflected the theme of the evening, Prom Night in Paris.

Kaline Rogers and Carl Held, two “very popular and helpful residents” according to Thicke, took home the crowns. Held, a retired actor who has been in programs such as “Star Trek,”” Falcon Crest” and “Charlie’s Angels,” was pleased with his win.

“It was a pleasant surprise. We’re like one big family here … I [also] really liked the food tonight,” said Held.

Rogers shared similar sentiments.

“It was a big surprise and an honor,” she said of being named prom queen. “It’s nice to know people love you.”
