On April 20, the GUSD community celebrated the grand opening of the latest classroom building built using Measure S funds with a ribbon cutting ceremony at R.D. White Elementary School.
GUSD Superintendent Winfred B. Roberson, Jr., GUSD Board President Dr. Armina Gharpetian, Board Member Greg Krikorian, and newly elected Board Member Shant Sahakian were on hand to celebrate and cut the ribbon. Also joining in the festivities were members of the GUSD Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee, the Superintendent’s Facility Advisory Committee, the Glendale Police Department, and R.D. White students, staff, and families.
The new, 2-story building features 18 classrooms, including the “Max Lab,” a combination technology lab/collaborative maker space named after Maximus, the R.D. White mascot. “We wanted more than just a traditional computer lab, so we specially designed the Max Lab to be a creative space where students could be mobile and work collaboratively,” said R.D. White Principal Narek Kassabian.
The project was funded by the District’s Measure S bond and the Overcrowding Relief Grant (ORG) Program, a State program that provides 50% funding to enable districts to reduce the number of portable classrooms on overcrowded school sites and replace them with permanent classrooms.
“This is the fourth ribbon cutting to celebrate the grand opening of a new school building in the GUSD in the past six months,” said GUSD Board President Armina Gharpetian. “We thank our dedicated community who voted to approve Measure S and make these projects possible.”
GUSD Superintendent Winfred B. Roberson, Jr. added, “Two years ago, R.D. White Elementary turned 100 years old; it’s wonderful to have a new school building that will serve our community for another 100 years.”
