Ocean View Rehabilitation Project
A long awaited project in the Sparr Heights Business District is finally set to start and that is good news for the area. The purpose of the project is to beautify the area, fix existing issues, like curbs and sidewalks, and help slow down the traffic on Ocean View Boulevard to increase public safety. Some of the highlights of the project include installing a traffic signal at the intersection of Ocean View and Verdugo Road by Schreiner’s, a flashing stop sign at the intersection of Sunview and Ocean View Boulevard and red stamped crosswalks at Broadview and Sunview to match the ones in the Montrose Shopping Park. Work will begin Monday, June 12 on the west side of Ocean View Boulevard at Broadview to create a bump-out and make sidewalk repairs. Work will then move to the east side of the street in mid-July. The City of Glendale is working diligently to minimize any possible inconveniences. They are pouring quick drying concrete in the morning so it will be set by the evening, keeping the street open with workers directing traffic, and bringing in a second crew to make the improvements on Honolulu Avenue and Market Street.
The many aspects to this project are outlined in the following message from the City of Glendale: “The City of Glendale’s Public Works Department is making traffic and street improvements in the Sparr Heights neighborhood as part of the Ocean View Rehabilitation project. The total time frame for the entire project is approximately 70 working days, and is scheduled to begin [in] June 2017 and is expected to be completed by October 2017, barring unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions. The following improvements are scheduled to be completed at the various locations: 1) Selective removal and repair of broken and damaged curbs and gutters; driveway and alley approaches; sidewalks; and deteriorated asphaltic concrete pavement; 2) Installation of new gutter on Ocean View Boulevard; 3) Installation and/or reconstruction of curb ramps meeting current Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines; 4) Installation of bulb-out at Ocean View Boulevard and Broadview Drive; 5) Surface grinding of existing asphalt concrete pavement; 6) Placement of Asphalt Rubber Hot Mix (ARHM) surface course; 7) Relocation of catch basin at North East corner of Ocean View Boulevard and Broadview Drive; 8) Modification of traffic signal system at Ocean View Boulevard and Broadview Drive; 9) Installation of new traffic signal system at the corner of Ocean View Boulevard and Verdugo Road with a dedicated turn lane into Sparr Heights; 10) Installation of pavement striping, bike lane, and other pavement markings; 11) Removal of three existing trees and planting of five new street trees; 12) Installation of bulb-out at intersection of Honolulu Avenue and Agner Avenue; 13) Increase in length of the westbound bus stop at Honolulu Avenue and Market Street.
“The City is committed to working with you to help alleviate the impact of the construction on your daily activities. Every effort will be made to minimize any inconveniences to you. If you need to drive through the construction zone, please allow additional commuting time. We will post a door hanger that targets the day we expect to be in your neighborhood, barring unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions. We will also post “NO PARKING” signs in the workzone 24 hours in advance of working on your street. Unfortunately, the project is sometimes delayed, in which case, the previous day’s work may not be finished and construction activities will resume the next working day.
“Thank you for your assistance while we work to improve the City of Glendale. If you have any questions or concerns please call the City of Glendale Public Works Department: (818) 548-3945 Ext. 8288. Yvonne Guerra.”
