‘MIGRANT’ AT ADAMS SQUARE MINI PARK
The Adams Hill Neighborhood Association is hosting the art installation “Migrant” by Luke Elton Smith through Nov. 17.
Luke Elton Smith is an installation artist and architect residing in Los Angeles. His work focuses on the creation of spatial effects that create multiple readings on various scales. He studied Architecture at Princeton University and is a registered Architect in the state of California.
 “Migrant” consists of approximately 3,700 scale human figures, suspended in a cloud-like grid. The piece was originally conceived in early 2016 as a response to the European Migrant Crisis, and is a visual representation of those who died while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea during 2015. The media’s portrayal of these individuals is typically presented as quantities or numbers, to understand the amount of lives lost. This installation seeks to create a volumetric representation of how many lives are approximated to have been lost in the pursuit of a better life.  The installation increases in relevance in 2017 as more countries around the world engage in their own migrant-related issues.  Viewers are also encouraged to visit the installation in the evening when it is lit and the scale figures glow.

ALEX THEATRE CELEBRATES 92 YEARS
Glendale Arts, the non-profit management company of the Alex Theatre, is celebrating the historic venue’s 92nd birthday with a birthday celebration on Sept. 3. Suggested donations are encouraged for $19.25 to commemorate the year the Theatre was built. AUTHOR HUSBERG AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

PARKS ON CV SIERRA CLUB AGENDA
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club hosts Robin Parks at its next meeting on Tuesday evening, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library. Parks will present “Mountain Lions 101.”
As a lifelong admirer of the big cats, Parks began doing volunteer work at animal sanctuaries in California and other locations, where he first encountered captive mountain lions. This experience led him to the Mountain Lion Foundation (MLF), where he has been a field volunteer. He is very involved in reaching out to law enforcement agencies, who are often first responders to mountain lion sightings and incidents. He provides the biology of the animal, explains aggressive vs. non-aggressive behavior, and officer safety procedures, and addresses the myths and misinformation that surround these animals. He will discuss various “shoot/don’t shoot” scenarios and the considerations relative to law enforcement personnel to illustrate that the killing of a wayward mountain lion having wandered into human territory is rarely necessary and often the wrong decision.

CELEBRATING CURIOUS GEORGE DAY
Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse is celebrating Curious George Day on Sept. 16 at 10:30 a.m. with a special storytime that includes a craft activity
and appearances by Curious George and the Man in the Yellow Hat.
George’s adventures began when he was brought from his home in Africa by “The Man with The Yellow Hat” to live in a giant city. The first story was published in France in 1939. Books featuring the adventures of Curious George have been translated from the original French into many other languages in addition to English. The books have been adapted into several television series and films.

‘THE BEST OF KHACHATURIAN’ AT ALEX
Pacific Ballet Dance Theatre (PBDT) will present “The Best Of Khachaturian,” an evening of ballet and instrumental music written by iconic Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian, on Sept. 17 at the Alex Theatre. Included will be performances of “Saber Dance” and “Lezginka” from “Gayane,” as well as selections from “Spartacus” and “Masquerade,” and a new work entitled “Remember,” set to selections from the “Cello Concerto In E-Minor,” in memory of the Armenian Genocide.
Natasha Middleton, artistic director, with Ruben Tonoyan, associate director and ballet master for Pacific Ballet Dance Theatre, will co-direct the performance.

A community support group for persons with fibromyalgia and/or arthritis meets monthly at La Cañada Presbyterian Church for personal and social support, and education in lifestyle management of these difficult medical issues.
The support group is led by Dianne Whiting, MA, PT and Katie Phillips-Rector, MS, MFT intern.

Thea Constantine grew up in Hollywood and spent her youth in the clubs and streets of Los Angeles before finally settling in Portland, Oregon. In between adventures, she has worked as an award-winning performer, filmmaker, playwright and giant shrimp. Her first novel “Stumptown” began as a serial for the online magazine The Black Boot, under the name “Portlandia.” Her short stories have been published in a number of journals, magazines and anthologies.

LOCAL YOGA CLASS

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
 All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
