CV Weekly Office Closed
In recognition of the Labor Day holiday, the offices of CV Weekly will be closed on Monday, Sept. 4. We will reopen on Tuesday at 8 a.m.
Burrtec Holiday Schedule
The offices of Burrtec Waste Services will be closed on Monday, Sept. 4 in observance of the Labor Day holiday.
Those who have Burrtec collection service will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week.  
‘Coyote’ Campfire at Deukmejian
Time is running out to reserve a spot for the Saturday, Sept. 2 “coyote” campfire at Deukmejian Wilderness Park.     
The fun starts at 6:30 p.m. with a craft and then attendees will move into the amphitheater for a 7 p.m. start to the campfire. Call (818) 548-3795 to save a place for the songs, skits, smiles, and s’mores.
Deukmejian Wilderness Park is located at 3429 Markridge Road in La Crescenta.
USC-VHH Hosts Free Seminar on Suicide Prevention
In recognition of Worldwide Suicide Prevention Day, the University of Southern California Verdugo Hills Hospital (USC-VHH) is organizing its second annual suicide awareness and prevention conference. The Sept. 9 event, entitled “Having Courageous Conversations About Depression and Suicide,” is free to the public and will focus on the suicidal brain and methods for communicating with depressed and at-risk individuals.
The event program includes discussions led by mental health experts and professionals who work with at-risk individuals, including Kevin Briggs of CHiP Golden Gate Patrol, who has experience speaking with suicidal people, and Victoria Arango, PhD, of the National Institute of Mental Health, who will discuss the genetics of suicide. In the afternoon, attendees will screen “The S Word: The Visual Journey Into the Mind of a Suicidal Person,” followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, Lisa Klein.
The seminar will be held at USC-VHH, 1812 Verdugo Blvd. in Glendale. Registration opens at 8 a.m., and the program runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Space is limited and attendees must RSVP at http://uscvhh.org/2017suicideawareness.
Apps Accepted for Commission on the Status Of Women
The City of Glendale Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is seeking two new student ex officio members. The CSW is composed of seven volunteer members, five of whom are appointed by the city council and two student ex officio members who are appointed by the current commissioners. The CSW is currently searching for its 2017-18 student ex officio members to serve on the CSW for one year (November 2017 – October 2018).

County Expands Efforts to Help Foster Youth
The LA County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion last week by Supervisors Kathryn Barger and Hilda L. Solis that seeks to organize and enhance efforts by county departments and community partners to help foster youth transition to successful adulthood.
Under the direction of the chief executive office and the Office of Child Protection, the County will examine the existing system of care and collaborate with community organizations and partners who are experts in the fields of housing, employment, education and health to identify the gaps and shortfalls in services, potential bureaucratic hurdles, existing successful initiatives, and promising pilot programs.
