On Thursday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse welcomes Bill Nye – the Science Guy and co-author Gregory Mone for a presentation and signing of “In the Deep Blue Sea, Book 2” in their bestselling Jack and the Geniuses series (for readers grades three through seven).
This is a ticketed event. A pre-ordered book purchase provides an entry ticket for one person. Those who buy a book will have $5 entry tickets available for up to four additional people. Orders can be placed over the phone, but the tickets must be picked by 3 p.m. on Sept. 14.
The Jack and the Geniuses series combines real-world science along with a mysterious adventure that will leave kids guessing until the end, making the books ideal for STEM education.

CELEBRATING CURIOUS GEORGE DAY

George’s adventures began when he was brought from his home in Africa by “The Man with The Yellow Hat” to live in a giant city. The first story was published in France in 1939. ‘MIGRANT’ AT ADAMS SQUARE MINI PARK
The Adams Hill Neighborhood Association is hosting the art installation “Migrant” by Luke Elton Smith through Nov. 17.
Luke Elton Smith is an installation artist and architect residing in Los Angeles. His work focuses on the creation of spatial effects that create multiple readings on various scales. “Migrant” consists of approximately 3,700 scale human figures, suspended in a cloud-like grid. The piece was originally conceived in early 2016 as a response to the European Migrant Crisis, and is a visual representation of those who died while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea during 2015. The media’s portrayal of these individuals is typically presented as quantities or numbers, to understand the amount of lives lost. This installation seeks to create a volumetric representation of how many lives are approximated to have been lost in the pursuit of a better life.  The installation increases in relevance in 2017 as more countries around the world engage in their own migrant-related issues.  Viewers are also encouraged to visit the installation in the evening when it is lit and the scale figures glow.

‘THE BEST OF KHACHATURIAN’
Pacific Ballet Dance Theatre (PBDT) will present “The Best Of Khachaturian,” an evening of ballet and instrumental music written by Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian, on Sept. 17 at the Alex Theatre. Included will be performances of “Saber Dance” and “Lezginka” from “Gayane,” as well as selections from “Spartacus” and “Masquerade,” and a new work entitled “Remember,” set to selections from the “Cello Concerto In E-Minor,” in memory of the Armenian Genocide.
Natasha Middleton, artistic director, with Ruben Tonoyan, associate director and ballet master for Pacific Ballet Dance Theatre, will co-direct the performance.
The performance begins at 5:00 p.m.; there will be a pre-performance VIP catered reception at 3:30 p.m.

MANAGING THE AGING PROCESS LECTURE SERIES
USC-VHH is hosting a free monthly lecture series titled “Managing the Aging Process” for patients, caregivers and anyone in the community who may have questions and concerns about this challenging transition. WIGGLE WAGGLE COMING TO ROSE BOWL
All are invited to grab their walking shoes and a leash for the 19th Annual Wiggle Waggle Walk and Family Festival at Brookside Park at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Sunday, Sept. 24. The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA (PHS) hopes to raise $300,000 from the event, which will be used for food, shelter and medical care for homeless animals, more than 11,000 of which are taken in by PHS every year.
Participants can walk a one- or three-mile loop around the Rose Bowl or stay behind to enjoy vendor booths at Brookside Park. Those who are unable to attend the event can still donate via the Walk website.
 Early bird registration is $20 and includes a Wiggle Waggle Walk t-shirt, bib number and bandana for your dog. After September 11, the registration fee will be $25. Pre-registration is encouraged, but Walkers may also register at the event. Fundraisers can receive a spot in the coveted VIP Lounge by raising $500 or more. The VIP Lounge will feature complimentary breakfast, beverages and free giveaways.
 Check-in opens at 8 a.m. at Brookside Park. The Walk begins at 9 a.m. and festivities, including vendor booths, K-9 demonstrations, food trucks, music and canine contests, will continue until noon.

Dr. Ted Stern, professor of music at Glendale Community College, will once again begin a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This ongoing series is for musicians and non-musicians alike and explores the histories of composers and their music.
This new series of classes will cover the topic “A New Appreciation of Music: Surprises from the Internet (Beginning in 1900: Rachmaninov and the post-romantics).”

LOCAL YOGA CLASS

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
 All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
