It’s Club Expo time again at Crescenta Valley High School. The Expo showcases about 100 student clubs at the school that cover a variety of interests.
“This is Club Expo – one week dedicated to clubs advertising,” said Associated Student Body President Joe Suh, a senior at CVHS.
The Expo has information on new and returning clubs. Suh added the clubs give students an opportunity to become involved in the school through their own specific interest.
“We want people to join clubs,” he said.
Clubs are required to create a constitution that outlines their purpose and elects officers. If a club is created and a similar club has already been established on the campus, the new club is asked to join with the established one.
In addition to preparing and organizing Club Expo, ASB had also organized a fundraiser to help its new sister school, Lumberton High School in Lumberton, Texas, that was affected by Hurricane Harvey. CVHS Principal Linda Junge’s niece and her family lost their home to Harvey, even though they were on higher ground and were told they would not be affected by the storm. They were evacuated many times because the hotel where they first sought refuge was flooded as were friends’ homes. The flooding and devastation seemed to be everywhere.
Junge reached out to Lumberton High School and found they were dealing with the aftermath of Harvey as was her niece. Junge offered for CVHS to become a sister school to Lumberton and the Texas school accepted her offer.
Suh and ASB then got to work. They have organized a fundraiser that involves the entire school. They’ve distributed donation containers to each class and students are asked to donate everyday.
“We are going to fundraise [throughout] the month,” Suh said. “We decided on a donation drive [for funds] rather than for supplies. We watched a video and saw how some of the supplies donated had to be tossed out.”
Food and other perishables had to be discarded after their expiration dates. Though responders to Hurricane Harvey appreciated all the donations, at times the donations did not match the needs. ASB decided to do a fundraiser in which they can present the school with a check so they can purchase what is needed.
