Fire House Speaker Series Begins

By Mary O’KEEFE

The Fire House youth center launches a new program titled Career Speaker Series with criminalist Michelle Sandberg with the Los Angeles Sheriffs Dept. Crime Lab.

The Fire House youth center opened its doors about eight years ago as a safe place for kids. Youth with a variety of interests were invited to come and talk to friends, play a game of pool or air hockey and just have fun. The youth center is supported by St. Luke’s of the Mountains and is governed by a board composed of high school students.

The Fire House board created the Career Speaker Series for students to have an opportunity to meet mentors face-to-face to ask questions about their specific careers and find out what path they took to get there.

The Speaker Series will be held once a month on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Fire House, 2563 Foothill Blvd. Upcoming speakers include Glendale Community College Dean of Health Services who will speak about nursing on Oct. 24 and on Nov. 28, a Los Angeles County Fire Dept. firefighter will speak about his career.
