Free Friends & Family Show
The La Cañada High School marching band invites the community to the Friends & Family Show on Friday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. at the La Cañada High School Stadium. This is the final home performance of the Marching Spartans 2017 field show, “Rapunzel.” The show features music from Edvard Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite” and Radiohead’s “Creep.” The band and color guard will be led on the field by Senior Drum Major Bryan Guan. This year’s show puts forth champion showmanship … there’s even Rapunzel’s tower with 55 feet of her hair!
The band will leave Friday, following the show, to compete in the Western Band Association Championships in Clovis.
Admission is free.

Science Fiction Stories Wanted High school students from schools across Los Angeles County are invited to submit their original short science fiction stories to The Tomorrow Prize now through Feb. 26, 2018. The finalists’ stories will be read by celebrity guests on stage at LitFest Pasadena on May 20, 2018 and the winners will receive cash prizes. Presented by the arts and education nonprofit Light Bringer Project and Sci-Fest L.A., The Tomorrow Prize is an opportunity for students to shine as the thinkers of the future. The Tomorrow Prize identifies and nurtures the up-and-coming science fiction writing talent of Los Angeles County.
The Tomorrow Prize is open to all ninth to 12th grade students attending schools in Los Angeles County. Up to six finalists are chosen. First, second, and third place prizes, as well as certificates, will be presented to the finalists and the honorable mentions at the reading. First place is $250; second place is $150; third place – $100; The Green Feather Award is $250 and Los Angeles Audubon membership.

Honorary Service Award Program The CVHS PTSA would like to acknowledge individuals and organizations for outstanding community service to our school and to students in our community.
Those who would like to nominate a student, teacher, administrator, parent, community leader or business that is deserving of an Honorary Service Award, we want to hear from you! All nominations will be considered. The HSA Selection Committee will select the recipients.
Please return nominations in a sealed envelope to the CVHS PTSA box anytime in the school office or mail to CVHS PTSA, 2900 Community Ave., La Crescenta, CA 91214.
The deadline to submit is Dec. 20. The HSA Awards will be presented to this year’s recipients at the PTSA Founders Day Association Meeting on Feb. 26, 2018 in the school cafeteria.

Spotlight Apps Accepted Southern California high school students interested in the performing arts can apply now to be a part of the 30th annual free Spotlight arts education and scholarship program presented by The Music Center. The annual program offers arts training, experience and workforce development skills taught by professional artists and arts administrators, and awards more than $100,000 in scholarships. All students who apply to Spotlight receive written feedback from a distinguished panel of judges and a certificate of achievement. In addition, they have an opportunity to receive valuable audition experience and knowledge in their performance disciplines through master classes and performance. Students also experience a supportive environment in which to develop important life skills, including self-esteem, preparation and perseverance. The deadline for submission is Oct. 16.
