FALL SHOP NIGHT AND GALA TICKETS
The La Cañada Junior Women’s Club is hosting its annual Fall Shop Night tonight, Thursday, Nov. 16 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the 1300-1500 blocks of Foothill Boulevard. Plenty of holiday décor!
The club is also holding its annual gala fundraiser on Feb. 24 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. An Enchanted Evening at the Villa, held at a historic property that was once featured as a Pasadena Showcase home, promises to be lively and fun while raising money for the Club’s two supported philanthropies, Ronald McDonald House and Five Acres.
The party includes old Hollywood-themed drinks and food, silent auction, wine toss and dancing as a DJ spins favorite tunes.

SOCIAL ACTION VIDEO, DISCUSSION
The story of the Pilgrims has become obscured by myth, entwined with Thanksgiving Day feasts, football games and parades. Who were the men and women of the band of English Protestants whom we call “the Pilgrims”? How shall we remember them?
“The Pilgrims” chronicles the origins and critical first decade of the first permanent English colony in New England. It will be screened on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. at Unitarian Universalist Church of Verdugo Hills, 4451 Dunsmore Ave., La Crescenta. All are welcome.

FIBROMYALGIA/ARTHRITIS SUPPORT GROUP
A community support group for persons with fibromyalgia and/or arthritis meets monthly at La Cañada Presbyterian Church for personal and social support, and education in lifestyle management of these difficult medical issues.
The support group is led by Dianne Whiting, MA, PT and Katie Phillips-Rector, MS, MFT intern.

ONE YEAR: THE ART OF POLITICS IN LA
The opening reception for the exhibit “One Year: The Art of Politics in Los Angeles” is on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Brand Library & Art Center.
The exhibition features the work of 20 Los Angeles-based artists whose engagement with political topics is an integral part of their practices.
The exhibition will be on display from Nov. 18 through Jan. 18, 2018.

MANAGING THE AGING PROCESS LECTURE SERIES
USC-VHH is hosting a free monthly lecture series titled “Managing the Aging Process” for patients, caregivers and anyone in the community who may have questions and concerns about this challenging transition. The lectures, presented in partnership with Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles, will be held the third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at USC-VHH.
The next lecture in the series will be held Nov. 21 and is titled “10 Tips for Facing the Holidays.”

‘HANDS OFF MY BALLOT’ SPEAKER AT DEM CLUB
Elections watchdog Judy Alter, EdD, will speak at the next meeting of the Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club on Sunday, Nov. 19 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living.
Dr. Alter, an emeritus UCLA professor, founded Protect California Ballots after discerning voting machine irregularities in the 2003 recall election of Gov. Gray Davis, when Arnold Schwarzenegger won. Alter has been sleuthing elections mischief and advocating for protecting voters’ ballots ever since.
President Chuck Guinta will call for a vote for 2018 officers and whether to donate to the campaign of Democrat Doug Jones running for US Senate from Alabama.

THANKSGIVING FUN RUN
All are invited to take part in the annual Thanksgiving Day Run & Food Drive on Thursday, Nov. 23. Sponsored by the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge, the Thanksgiving Day 5K Run/Walk has been a local tradition and a community favorite with families, athletes, and community supporters of all types for two decades. The race is professionally timed, and begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. at Memorial Park in La Cañada, followed by the Kids’ Mile at 9:30 a.m. Please bring non-perishable food items with you on race day for the food drive.

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE
On Saturday, Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse celebrates Small Business Saturday with a day full of guest authors, artists, live music and activities for all ages. Small Business Saturday is a nationwide event started by American Express in 2010, dedicated to showing support for indie businesses and recognizing their contributions to their communities.
Come and join the fun! Throughout the day, we have tables for coloring (all ages), game demos, and other activities. And there will be lots of giveaways, including bags full of books, tote bags and T-shirts.
Finally, visitors can contribute to a book drive benefitting Literally Healing of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Last year the program gifted over 42,000 new books to patients and their siblings. Flintridge Bookstore’s drive for Literally Healing lasts through the end of the year.

GLA HOSTING TOY DRIVE MIXER
The Glendale Latino Association is hosting a “Cops for Kids” toy drive mixer on Wednesday, Nov. 29 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Porto’s Bakery & Café. The cost for admission is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. All are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy or gift card to benefit those in need. (Gift cards make great gifts for teenagers.)

ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS
Dr. Ted Stern, professor of music at Glendale Community College, will once again begin a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This ongoing series is for musicians and non-musicians alike and explores the histories of composers and their music.
This series of classes covers the topic “A New Appreciation of Music: Surprises from the Internet (Beginning in 1900: Rachmaninov and the post-romantics).”

LITTLE LANDERS ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY
The Little Landers Annual Holiday Party takes place on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. at Bolton Hall and features the Randy Van Horne Singers.

VERDUGO HILLS HIGH SCHOOL EXHIBIT EXTENDED
Bolton Hall Museum has extended the current exhibit display of Verdugo Hills High School memorabilia through the end of 2017. This action is being taken in honor of this year’s 80th anniversary of Verdugo Hills High School’s service to the Sunland-Tujunga community.
The Museum’s next exhibit – “Will You Marry Me?” – is a display of historical wedding customs and artifacts and will open in January 2018.

LOCAL YOGA CLASS
Gentle/level one yoga classes continue on Friday mornings at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s of Mountains Church.
This class will improve joint mobility, flexibility, muscle strength and balance and will include some restorative yoga poses to help the body heal its own aches and pains by engaging the parasympathetic system. NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m. This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
