SQUARE DANCE CLUB STARTING
BEGINNERS CLASS
Sets in Step Square Dance Club is
sponsoring a new beginners class tonight,
Thursday, Sept. 16. The dancing, called
by professional caller Ron Durkee, will
be from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the La
Cañada Community Center. The dress is
casual, and the price is $6 per person. To
have a partner is suggested, but singles
are welcome also. The Community Center
is located at 4469 Chevy Chase Drive, La
Cañada, off of Foothill.

FOR GRACE HOLDING CONFERENCE
For Grace, a nonprofit organization
devoted to ensuring the ethical and
equal treatment of all women in pain,
is holding its 3rd Annual Women in
Pain Conference: Gender Matters on
Friday, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at
the California Endowment’s Center for
Healthy Communities in downtown Los
Angeles.
This year’s theme is “Raising the Curtain
on Pain” and will focus on integrative
medicine and creative art therapies.
All women in pain and their caregivers
may attend for free. The conference
includes free breakfast, lunch and
educational materials.
The conference is accredited for 5 CEUs
for RNs.

FALL FAMILY FESTIVAL
On Sept. 18, community families and
friends are invited to a family festival in
Sun Valley from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
There will be games, prizes, raffles, free
food and other attractions. It is sponsored

BOOKSTORE HOSTING POETRY
Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse
is hosting Poetry from the Foothills, an
afternoon of readings by Ross Peterson of
La Crescenta, James Pinkerton of Sylmar,
and Maja Trochimczyk representing
Sunland-Tujunga. The event takes place
on Sunday, Sept. 19, from 3-5 p.m., and
includes a 45-minute open mic session at
the end. All are welcome.

EARLY WARNER BROS. STUDIOS
SUBJECT OF MEETING
Since 1928, Warner Bros. has produced
thousands of beloved films and television
shows at the studio’s 110-acre film factory
in Burbank. The next meeting of the
Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley
will have a presentation that concentrates
on the Warner Bros. legacy from the 1920s
to the 1950s, when timeless classics such
as Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, and
East of Eden came to life.
This program also looks at WB’s earlier
homes along Hollywood’s “Poverty Row,”
the birthplace of Looney Tunes, and the
site of WB’s pioneering marriage between
film and sound in the 1920s.
Early Warner Bros. Studios also tells
the tale of four brothers: Harry, Albert,
Sam, and Jack Warner, scions of a Polish
Jewish immigrant family who rose from
the humblest of origins to become
Hollywood moguls of enormous and
lasting influence.
Speakers E.J. Stephens is a former WB
Studios worker as well as newspaper
columnist and film-series host, and
volunteers with his wife, Kim, a 22-year
WB employee, as a docent for the Warner
Bros. Museum.
Marc Wanamaker is a film historian and
consultant, a founder of the Hollywood
Heritage Museum, and established Bison
Archives in 1973, which is one of Southern
California’s most notable repositories of
entertainment heritage.

QUARTERBACK CLUB GEARING UP
FOR NEW SEASON
The Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club
is kicking off its 68th year. The QB Club
supports CV, Glendale, Hoover, and St.
Francis football and Glendale CC football.
Members meet every Tuesday at 11:30
a.m. at the Elks Club, 120 E. Colorado Blvd.,

ARTS CENTER HOSTING ART SALE
& AUCTION
McGroarty Arts Center in Tujunga is
hosting the Sunland-Tujunga Alliance and
the Art Sale & Auction. The event will take
place on Sunday, Sept. 19 from 3:00 to
6:00 p.m. in the main hall at the McGroarty
Arts Center.
The art sale & auction will consist of
over 50 pieces of varying shapes and
sizes on display. Most of the pieces are
professionally framed and are prices
significantly lower than the appraised
value. One individual has donated his
entire art collection to benefit three
organizations that serve the community
of Sunland-Tujunga: Sunland- Tujunga
Alliance, McGroarty Arts Center and Little
Landers Historical Society. In addition,
local artists are donating their own works
to help raise needed funds to help keep
these organizations functioning.

CVHS CHORAL ALUMS WANTED
Former members of choral group at
Crescenta Valley High School are invited
to take part in the CVHS Alumni Chorale.
The group, composed of CVHS choral
alumni men and women, rehearse once
a week on Wednesdays from 7:15 p.m.
– 9:15 p.m., at the Glendale First United
Methodist Church. The group performs for
local civic groups and retirement homes
in Pasadena, Glendale, La Crescenta,
Montrose and Duarte during the holiday
season and again in the late spring/
early summer. After the holiday season
performances the group will resume
rehearsals in the middle of January 2011.
