ART OUT OF TRASH
Cathy Hrenda, resident of Adams Hill, composes artworks from found objects and trash. Since 2015 she has designed and installed a holiday-inspired work in the landmark Richfield Gas Station in the Adams Square Mini-Park with help from the surrounding community. These community projects have been carried out in coordination with the City of Glendale Community Parks and Services Dept.
This year the installation, on view through Jan. 13, is composed almost entirely of trash. Many of the constituent parts were roadside trash gathered on walks Hrenda took in and around Glendale. The piece, entitled “We’re All In The Same Boat,” consists of a six-foot sea serpent covered in bottle caps and other plastic throw-aways. He is accompanied by a man sitting in a rowboat towing a patio umbrella frame decorated with recycled cardboard and plastic bottle ornaments. Students from John Muir Elementary School painted cardboard fish that swim around the boat and ornaments were completed by members of the community in the Adams Square Mini Park.

‘HITLER IN LOS ANGELES’ TOPIC OF BOOK
Steven J. Ross visits Downtown Central Library – Glendale for his latest title, “Hitler in Los Angeles: How Jews Foiled Nazi Plots Against Hollywood and America” on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Join Ross and ReflectSpace Gallery for a special reception at 6 p.m. for “i am: Narratives of the Holocaust” exhibition closing on Jan. 21. Lecture begins at 7 p.m.
Hitler in Los Angeles is the chilling, little-known story of a Jewish spy ring in Los Angeles that operated from August 1933 to the end of World War II, fighting the rise of Nazism in the United States. As “Hitler in Los Angeles” reveals, American Jews were far more active in fighting Hitler in the United States than Communist-obsessed government authorities – only attorney Leon Lewis, the man Nazis would come to call “the most dangerous Jew in Los Angeles,” and his daring ring of spies stood in the way. Lewis ran a spy operation composed of military veterans and their wives who infiltrated every Nazi and fascist group in Los Angeles.
All are invited to this free presentation.
Downtown Central Library – Glendale is located at 222 E. Harvard St. Visitors to the Downtown Central Library receive three hours free parking in the MarketPlace parking structure on Harvard Street with validation at the service desk on the main floor.
