How Are You Feeling?
Well, we’re 18 days into the New Year – how are those New Year’s resolutions coming along? I know that, like many CV Weekly readers, I resolved to lose weight and just be healthier. But already I’ve come to realize that it’s not an easy road to travel. To lose weight, I have to eat less chocolate and drink less wine (gasp!). Neither is appealing to me. However, I have made some inroads that don’t include taking my glasses off when I step on the scale so I can’t see the numbers. These include charting what I’m eating and drinking so I’m aware of what I’m putting into my body. Fun? Heck, no, but it is an eye-opening process.
Exercise is also so important. I’m reminded of something I read some time ago when I was studying aging. (If you remember, my father died at 52, my mother at 63 and my sister at 52, so I don’t really know what “elderly” looks like for me.) What I read is to make friends with movement as you age. Lack of movement can adversely affect a person’s health, particularly in the senior years. Fortunately for us in California, we have many options on how to achieve more movement. Walking and running are just a pair of sneakers away and, if you know of an indoor or heated swimming pool, you’re ready to “dive” in.
For those who yearn for some direction in their exercise regime, we have some outstanding training facilities, from “exercise bootcamps” to circuit trainers to yoga studios. For the mind, there are a variety of meditation studios to check out and churches can offer a way to unplug from the secular and plug into the spiritual.
At CV Weekly, the month of January is dedicated to healthy living with emphasis this week on the topic. In the following pages you will find a plethora of suggestions on how to live a healthier life with ideas on exercise, nutrition and positive thinking.
So get into the lotus position with a steaming cup of herbal tea, and learn how you can move toward your healthful living goals.

Rachelle Miller has taken the reins of the front office over from Emily Cronkhite. Rachelle is a fixture at Lincoln Elementary and Rosemont Middle schools and has the skills and attitude that will ease our pain in losing Emily, who is giving birth to a new Cronkhite. I know I share your well wishes for Emily, her husband Steven and son Aiden as they prepare for their new son’s arrival.
